Engineers Turning in exploration data to Palin?

First of all thanks for this great forum. Without the folks on here to help I would still probably be jumping around in space trying to get 5000 LY.....I figure I will be back home sometime this weekend with loads of exploration data for Palin. I do not have the unknown artifacts just yet....should I get them before I turn in my exploration data or can I turn it in to him before I get the fragments. The reason I ask is on the outside change something happens and I get wiped out as I am carrying the data. I would prefer to get it to him on my first visit back home. Concerned that I will not get the rank up credit though until I provide the fragments...

The unknown fragments are materials... You can't loose them by destruction. You can find many at the crash site on HIP 17862. I did in about 30 mins. I just got about 1k ly further to go before I can turn back to palin!

Thanks for that! So this crash site? Where is it or will it be obvious when I get there? I will go there as soon as I get back. I am only 2500 LY out and then have to come back. :)

Make sure you do 5000ly out from start system... Check your stats tab, exploration and the engineer tab for palin to make sure you have achieved the unlock.

HIP 17862 on planet 6C A. Lat / long: 30.32/-98.6 . A few fragments around to scoop and several UAs. Shoot em and a fragment or two will drop. Every scoop is now x3 so much easier.

Was about 2500 out and decided to finish it.... 7500 lys...... Took about 2 hours. Man that was mind numbing! Lol

Am back home and will tackle the fragments tomorrow.... Will I need cargo holds?

dont need cargo they are materials
make sure you shoot them with the SRV weapon
make sure you dont have max materials when picking up

I have not tried to land on a planet using the lat and long. Is this something that is pretty cut and dry? Using the indicator in my ship can you get exactly to that point or do you land nearby and navigate with the srv?

Here's an example of finding a site by coordinates. This was done pre-2.1, so the compass is not visible during Orbital Cruise, but the technique is still essentially the same -- watch the latitude and longitude numbers on your HUD and figure out your direction. Now that we can see the compass, it makes it easier to keep the right bearing.

It's indeed a worthwhile information, that the fragments are material! Thank you for that!
Currently, I am also on my 5000 ly-trip for Palin and I was wondering, whether or not to get them, before I visit the engineer. I have just a 8t cargo rack outfitted, so I would have to visit a station first - or so I though. Now it's settled! :)

Anyway, I have another "problem", right now!

I've just reached the 5000 ly mark and got my invitation.
So I could return.

I could...
However, heading towards the center of the galaxy (and going further than ever before and never in VR), the milkyway now fills my canopy windows from left to right.
The distant suns are gleaming bright and welcoming, calling me to come closer, submerg myself into their warm light.
Now I feel the urge to continue my voyage. I want to be surrounded by all the stars. Learn how it feels not to gaze into the mainly black, but into a sky filled with thousands of brigth dots...

But I needed three days just to reach my current positon (I didn't just rush there, but took my time to scan what I found worthwhile - including an earth like planet and an amonea-world which will hopefully carry my tag when I return.)
And I've covered just one third of the necessary distance, if I decide to continue my expedition.

So... what to do now?
ED is said to be an "unforgiving" game without handholding.
I never thought, questions like the one above would be part of it...

And I love it! :)

I originally planned on taking my time and loaded a SRV which cost me a little on the range. After messing up and going 1300 LY straight up and have to come back and start over I said screw this! Jump Jump Jump......if I hadn't screwed up it would have taken about 3 hours total there and back with a 39 LY jump range ASP.

Hopefully the dirty drive will be worth it :)
