Newcomer / Intro Turning off the HUD

I've seen the key sequence described as Ctrl Alt G and Shift Alt G. I've tried both these and some other combinations (all with G). They tend to just zoom back a bit from the regular view or open the galaxy map. Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?
