Having used turrets for a while and studied some weapons damage charts, I am now under the impression that they need an increase in damge output.
The leap in damage between fixed and gimballed is far smaller than the leap in damage output between gimballed and turrets. The difference quite often seems not very reasonable.

We can see for instance the damage output on the C2 Multicannon variants.
Fixed 6.02
Gimbal 5.59
Turret 2.15
C3 Cannon variants.
Fixed 8.13
Gimbal 7.95
Turret 3.58
C3 Beam Laser variants.
Fixed 30.33
Gimbal 24.00
Turret 14.44
The gimbal weapons are often close in damage to their fixed counterparts while the turreted ones not only does less than half damage from fixed, but sometimes even half the damage from the gimbal ones.
Certainly, being able to fire in almost every direction is an advantage because the weapons have more time on target, but except for on extremely unmanouverable ships, most ships can keep their targets vaguely in front of them for most of the fights, which is enough for most gimbaled weapons, hence they can keep their weapons on target almost as well as turrets do.
Gimbal vs Fixed overall seems to make a much bigger difference in how much time the weapons spend putting fire into the target than Turret vs Gimbal, and yet the biggest damage drop is between the turret and gimbal weapons.
When we get multicrew, there is absolutely no reason that anyone would want to ever man a turret at their current damage output. Perhaps the plan is to make it so once a turret is manned by a player it gets significantly boosted damage output but even so I think the gap between unmanned turrets and gimballed weapons should be reduced to perhaps half of what it is right now.
