Newcomer / Intro Turret modes and manual control

Hi there.

It's my first time playing with turrets in a ship larger than a shoe.

I don't quite understand the modes, Forward only turns off any tracking but I have control. Fire At Will kind of does what I'd expect, and Target Only shoots only at the selected target, but I don't have any control, as soon as I hit my fire button they take over with a mind of their own. This is a pain when you're trying to juggle power and temperature etc.

I have a crew member sucking up 9% of my profits the greedy , but he's controlling the fighter, he doesn't do the guns as well does he?

How do I get control back? I want Target Only, but I want to chose when they fire.

I have my fire groups setup correctly, large beams on button one and the rails on button 2.

Is this just how it works and I'm stuck with it?

You seem to have it. Target only doesnt start till you press fire but after that you have no control. Best option is to have a fire group that does not have your turrets in it. Cycle through that group and they will stop firing. Back to your normal group and they will again only start when you press fire.
 
Turrets are good for top or bottom mounted weapons on slower ships. While your enemy is above or below you they can mostly keep on target with some sustained fire. They are useful on the bigger ships that have slower turn radius.
 
Hmm. So if I want full control over the weapons I need the gimbles not the turrets?

Yes.

You sumarised the turret options correctly, a way to stop them firing is to hit the next hostile target button then hit the previous hostile target button which will put you on the original ship with the guns off, retracting and extending hardpoints works as well. The best sollution is to adjust the number and type of weapons on turrets so that you can live with the drain they cause to your systems. Once you have the right engineering access it becomes much easier.
