I believe turrets were a source of many tears some time back, because they would quite often fire on wrong targets, flagging ships using them as wanted (even if the intentions were good).
I believe I've also read in the patch notes that turrets behave a lot better now. The ED wiki suggests that turrets will only fire on wanted targets (assuming "targeted enemy" or "fire at will" modes), which suggests they should be safe to use at RES sites.
That said, I've been hearing troubling reports that they will shoot un-scanned, hostile ships purely because they are hostile, rather than wanted (which contradicts the wiki), making them unsafe for RES (even when using the "targeted enemy" you may have trouble actually scanning if the turrets fire as soon as you get a lock).
So what's the current deal with turrets? Can someone clarify if the wiki is correct or are the turrets still too trigger happy?
