Turrets causing tourette's!!!!

Does anyone actually understand turrets?

Mine seem to barely ever actually fire on anyone, unless directed to. I can have pirates quite happilly kicking the crap out of my shields whilst my turrets (in fire-at-will mode) just sit there doing chuff all about it unless I switch to a different mode and manually fire the blighters. Even when they DO work in fire-at-will mode, they're pretty passive. Am I missing something? Are they bugged?

Using them in "Target Only" mode seems to work only a little better (as you have to turn to face the enemy to target them) and you may as well use Gimbals, mostly.

Using them in "Forward Fire" mode is really dense, since that's the same a "fixed", but vastly less efficient.

Turrets do not rotate 360 degrees and their position on the ship will also limit the coverage as well, perhaps thinking of them as wide angles gimbals might be a better idea, the fire at will setting is for wanted or attacking ships I use target only and that works fine.

I use them on ships with lower agility, two small pulse on the Viper is very effective as is two mediums on a Python or Dropship build or four small m-cannons on an Asp

While I wouldn't claim to understand turrets, I am using them effectively. I use them in "target only" mode and am prepared to keep tapping the fire button to wake them up. The are really uncooperative sometimes. When I have to have a weapon that will go "bang" every time I pull the trigger (like shoot-to-stop-the-scan while smuggling), I used gimballed or fixed. Right now I have a couple turretted cannons and multi-cannons on my Anaconda and they're working well.

I found that turrets on anything smaller than a Python are fairly useless. They're more suited to larger ships with poor maneuverability or poor hardpoint fire convergence like the Clipper or Cutter on the silly wings. In a smaller ship, you have the agility not to need turrets :)

For some reason, they've been stealth nerfed in the 1.5/2.0 patch, they track much slower and won't keep firing whilst locked on. 'Fire at will' has never worked properly, so use 'target only' for the best effect. You can switch to 'forward fire only' if the target you're shooting at decides to chaff spam... as NPC targets all seem to these days.
