Horizons Turrets - how do they work

My ship has turreted weapons. do I need to put them into a group for them to deploy and automatically shoot at locked targets in range/view.

Thought Id ask before trying .. safer that way

To use turrets, assign them a fire group then go to your ship settings panel on the right. scroll down until you see the turret option and select the option that works for you. Fire-at-will tells the turret to just start shooting (but only people with the name William) (No?), Fire ahead act like Fixed weapons without the corrections that Fixed weapons make at range, and the last option (can't remember the name) will fire if you are attacked.

Also... Turrets will continue firing until: A) they run out of power/ ammo, B) can't see their target, C) retracted, or D) have no target.

To clear this up.
Functions tab on the right panel - Turret mode.
1) Forward fire - act like a fixed weapon, fires when triggered.
2) Target only - Focuses targeted ship, start firing by pressing the trigger (depending on what firegroup you chose), then they will fire until the target is dead, out of range/firing arc, or you switch the targets.
3) Fire at will - will automatically fire at any and all hostile or attacking (red on radar) ships.

Also, Turrets are subject to Chaff and anything that affects the target's Signature. If you can apply additional Heat (either through forcing your target into adding heat themselves or by modifying your weapons through engineers), your turrets will be more accurate. Likewise, if your target drops a Heat sink you'll lose lock. Something that my FDL has experienced with all Fixed weapons. Simply, unlock and then relock after the effect ends.
 
And you are liable for any friendly fire incidents your turrets may cause...
I would say that this is only a real issue, if you have them set to 'fire at will'. I have mine (4 pluses on FDL) set to target and have never had a 'friendly fire' issue. Fire at will is another matter, especially in places like combat zones.
