Turrets - Useless amongst allies and cops?

I thought I'd try out the turret based weapons, it was pleasing to see they can pretty much shoot in all directions, and continuously.

Trouble is, out of the 7 or so nav beacons I went to them with, I ended up getting a fine within minutes for hitting a neutral or a cop.

Not sure if there's any particular way of using them other than they shoot away towards the general direction of a target.

I tried out turrets a while ago. I rapidly came to the conclusion that they were useless for bounty hunting due to the lack of ability to see where they're firing, and avoid friendly fire incidents.

I'll still fit them on hauling ships, but not on anything I plan to go into combat with.

Fair enough. They seemed like they'd be handy for picking off those smaller ships that can outmanoeuvre a Cobra in turns.

Got a link for a recommended kit of weapons for the Cobra? :)

Cheers

turrets are crap.
if u want to use them while hunting for bounty u can forget it. with "targets only" they fire on every ship who cross your target. after a while everyone on your radar is red because u hit to much other targets.
if u want to put turrets on your transportship like a lakon u can forget it too. the attacker is behind u while u want to get out with your jump and the turrets fires not backward!
the transportships needs a weaponslot at the ass of the ship :-D But if u have enough money, so u can buy turrets just 4 fun. Maybe your opponent is not so good and stay allways on your side or your front :p
only 1 positive point for the turret is "No Energy needed!".

so i can say: "don't buy a turret!"

If the anyone (including cops and still clean ships) hit me once with any type of weapon my turrets begin to fire upon them and I receive the bounty every time. I got rid of them until they can fix it.

Really, I feel like such a noob for not knowing that! OMW to buy me some! :) ... well once the servers are up

Well i appears that turrets do use power. I cut pips from them and they drain it, though not a lot.
They are useless on a combat vessel as they fire even when you use KWS without them being in the group. Also, when you do subtargeting they stop firing completely, though you could use this trick for KWS scanning.

White I agere that turrets are pretty useless for offensive operations, they work quite well on a T7. The T7 has a top and belly mount that are perfect for turrets. If you ever get interdicted, set them to full auto and weave around while you wait for your FSD to spool up. They are usually distraction enough that you attacker won't get a clean run on you. Combined with plenty of chaff and ecm and you should be able to escape most of the time.

For any other purpose, turrets are not the way to go atm.

If useless for bounty hunting how about those pesky interdictions? No allies or feds at hand , in say an Asp just trading so you're one on one?
