Twitch viewership near 100.

I was very surprised when ED first came out that it did gather alot of interest mostly due to favorable reviews. After 2 months that the game has been out however, I've seen twitch viewership of the game drop from the mid 2000's to near 200. A ten fold decrease in the game isn't a good sign for its longevity. Further many of the players trying to make this game exciting and worth watching are failing not due to their own accord but due to the plathora of reasons already stated here on these forums.

Specifically no multiplayer
AI is woefully predictive
Risk/reward is terribly out of balance
No purpose beyond a credit grind

So...I suppose in this numerical certainty that the game is going stale quickly in the eyes of viewership. Don't get me wrong the game is an epic achievement having 400 billion stars but somewhere it lost the idea of fun.

Lastly, I know the ED viewership has no desire to change course for twitch. If nobody finds the game worth watching, fine with them. If few find the game worth playing, fine with them.

My real question is since this is likely the last Elite game to be made, are you okay with being so selfish to have created a game so unplayable by the next generation of gamers as to isolate them from something that we all loved as kids?

I really wish FD had higher sights....I hate star citizen...money grubbed tossers but at least he understands gaming has evolved since the 80's.

That is where I leave David Braben....he was a brilliant visionary who simply got too old to relate to the audience...unless the audience is a couple thousand old people who liked his first go.

While I understand your points, I don't think the current ED is a reflection on the games of yesteryear and in fact modern games that are extremely successful have a tendency to be old models released to a new generation who never knew better.

Back on point ED =/= Elite 2 in my view, the framework is amazing the contents missing. If they made it 10x more dangerous it'd already be more interesting but safe sandboxes turn to tedium quickly without anything to strive for and no difficulty.

What?

And you're basing the game popularity on... twitch viewers?
Right then.
Exactly, those young kids watching twitch. What do they know. Only 400,000 of them currently watching league of legends....not a market there at all. We weren't those kids, all of us at some point in our lives. We don't owe it to them at all to give a playable game to dream like we did. Instead I feel this game is filled with contempt and instead of trying to pass a torch to a younger generation it is a spat in the face of gaming evolution. Again, I'm glad you enjoy your game.

Well, let's just say there appears to be a slight gap between 100 and 400.000.

Thats because they cannot giveaway items, no one is showing cleavage and theres no huge drama surrounding any ED Streamer.

Go ahead and look at CSGO streams, other than the usual tournament(and pro streams), the most viewed channels are freaking Unboxing streams and giveaways(with kids spamming !drop !givaway !awp), or some "gamer gurl", obviously.

Twitch views doesn't mean that much buddy.

Also,

Do you realize that not every game is Twitch friendly, right?

Look at 4X game sales, look at Civilization Series, look at Endless Legend...

Those are amazing games to PLAY, and are EXTREMELY POPULAR, but not so fun to watch.

To the OP, I believe you have missed the possibility that people have decided to stop watching other people playing the game, and start playing it for themselves - in which case they'd have no time free for watching anything, let alone a twitch stream of the game they are playing ;)

I'd be more than happy for you to show me with numbers from ED sales that I could be wrong?

the OP respectfully has it all wrong, twitch is really the latest game, theres been no news, 1.1 should see a recovery, if youre still doing twitch a lot of the might be playin the game now or gone back to wow. Why dont u come up to pand and look around. Explore the fringe, maybe youre style has turned viewers off, or they moved onto other things could be any number of things

I don't really care. If kids want to watch the next flashy thing let them, or be lazy and watch others play rather than do it themselves. There is only so much you can watch in any game before you have to play it.

Don't get me wrong, I see your criticism of the numbers completely.

People looking for free stuff and number of chics playing definately has a large boost in twitch viewership...but tenfold? No

And the people originally watching a month ago weren't watching for chics playing or for give aways....I was one of them. There were very few giveaways and maybe 2-3 serious female "boob tubes".

The viewership has obviously gone through a steep decline...no competing game has come out. It is more than one would expect from a sustaining MMO. You find another explaination other than its boring and I'm all ears.

I added this after you quoted me:

Twitch views = Nothing, absolutely nothing.

I hope you also realize that some Famous twitch streamers are PAID to play some games, to promote them after the launch. There are some famous streamers that will get 10K views regardless of the quality of the game they're playing.

this guy, this guy here is who I was waiting for. This is the defuncto ED answer. Who cares what those kids watch?

Just to shoot some holes in your next flashy thing idea. That League of Legends game has been played for over 5 years and the Dota game it was based off of came out of the warcraft III engine released in 2002(closer to frontiers first encounters release than to ED) just giving you some clarity on what true game longevity is like.

elite is not a 4x strat slug. Elite is a FPS. AT least thats what people keep telling me. The only issue is the same issue all MMO's have which is stream sniping.

I 100% agree some game types aren't meant to be watched. I just don't think elite should have been one of those but it is...is the problem

So? Only because it doesn't fit in the 4X genre does it mean what I just said is invalid? The average twitch streamer for ED has no idea what he's doing, people don't want to watch someone fail repeatedly and then get killed by another player, only to jump to Solo and continue do fail by himself.

Even some FPS games are not twitch friendly, but what makes a game popular on twitch is the streamers. People don't just watch a game, they want interaction and ED streamers are pretty meh.

Yup, I was one of those.. totally glued to twitch feeds for 4 days before this game released 1.0.0.0.. literally, 4 full days.. help me make the decision to buy it (pre ordered day before release) and i have only visited the 4 or 5 feeds i know for about an hour just to say a quick thanky you to the guys involved. And the reason is simple.. I'm way too busy in game to watch someone esle in game, and it kills my fps to run twitch in the background or on a different monitor

Regards

I think it is also worth noting the age of a large number of players in ED, in my age group 40+ and even the 30+ folk, we would have been more interested in watching pre release to see what it was all about, make sure it was ticking all the boxes, getting impatient and hyped up for a nastalgic return to our childhoods ect ect. Now, you may be able to qoute viewer numbers with clarity, but that is it, anything else, including a reason is pure speculation.

Last time I checked ED was not a competitive sport. Cricket is dull to watch but great to play.
