Two mining questions... laser range and asteroid size

Couldn't find answers to these. Pardon my search skills if I'm looking under the wrong rocks.

1. Is the mining laser more effective/efficient at close range to the asteroid?

2. Does the size of the asteroid matter, i.e., do bigger asteroids yield more fragments?

Thanks!

1 -> the range is so short that I didn't notice any difference. Just beware to not be too much close, otherwise you'll hit the 'roid with your nose.

2 -> no, all rocks have same amount of fragments.

1. I believe you need to be within 700m of the asteroid to be within range - other than that distance doesn't matter as far as I'm aware.

2. Again size doesn't matter either unfortunately - the only thing that effects the rock yield is prospector limpets
with prospector yields can be 20-30 fragments without is 10-15 iirc

Thanks! I kinda figured that was the case with both. Now I won't have any qualms with avoiding the giant ones spinning like crazy.

Distance: The lasers no difference once in range but the collectors yes. If you have a medium laser then you need 3 collectors or you can get to around 200 m range of the roid you're mining and 2 will almost keep up due to the shorter distance. Once depleted tilt the nose of your ship till the lines from the fragments are directly below your ship on the scanner. If the limpets only have to go up and down a short distance they're even faster and last longer.

Also if you can fit an A1 prospector limpet controller on your ship I would do it. It increases the yield that you get from the rock!

Get as close as you can... align with the non spinning axis of the rock... roll the ship once you start mining it so the fragments are coming off in a direct line under the nose so the limpets do less travel to the cargo hatch. Don't be scared of nudging the rock... that's what shields are for :)

I've read the prospector is just to find the composition of it. So it boosts the yeild? That is great if that is correct.

Is correct.

Though I hate how "gamey" that is.

IRL rocks don't yield more ore just because you looked at it through a microscope or whatever.

I blasted a rock until it was depleted and checked where the charge on my compositor was, then did the same on another rock when it had a prospector on it and it was around 50% more depleted. So it's not very accurate but you defiantly get more out of a prospector and the A1 is like 9K space bucks!
