I made a few macros in my X-55 setup. Two of them I found extremely useful:
For this I configured the cursor keys for energy management and "T" for boost.
The first one is just for comfort allowing multiple functions on one button depending on how long you push it:

Just clicking the button activates boost (T) ...if you hold it for 0.5 Sek it sets 4 pips to ENG und 2 pips to SYS.
The second one gives you a real advantage:

I use this on the "D" Button of the stick (behind the pinky switch). It puts 4 pips to engine while you keep it pushed and put the pips back in weapons when you release it.
I find this incredible useful in my not so nimble python to temporary increase my turn rate until the target is in reach of my gimbals again.
This should be possible with other HOTAS systems too. Or with GlovePIE, FreePIE or XPadder if you are using a controller.
I also use these macros for request docking an such things but i hope FD implement a key for that. The request macro does not work when the actvie tab on the left panel is not the first one.
