Ships Type-6 Explorer Build Advice

Greetings CMDRs,

I am planning on heading off soon on a long exploration trip and have decided on the T6 as my ship of choice.

Does anyone have any build advice for an exploring type-6?

This is the build I'm thinking of using

Should I swap the fuel tank out for cargo space?

I can swap in a smaller powerplant if I drop the planetary hangar but I'd like to be able to touch down every now and then for the views. Do you think I'll need upgraded thrusters for the planetary approaches?

Any tips are welcome!

Probably this is what I'd roll with.

Smaller power distributor, but still capable of boosting.
Bigger AFMU, smaller extra fuel tank.
Also, bigger vehicle hangar to accomodate 2 SRVs. Just in case. Thanks to changes it still retains same jump range as your build, even tiny bit more.
Only thing you sacrifice is total range. From 16 jumps with max range to 11. But in my book that's just fine.
4D thrusters will do the job if you approach high G planets carefully. You are pushing the power limit already anyway, so I'd keep them as they are.
You will have to keep one heat sink turned off to keep power at acceptable level. I don't see it as a problem, as you will most likely won't need two heat sink modules running at the same time. Once one of them is depleted - turn it off, turn on a new one.
Hope it helps.
I don't think my build is fundamentally better, it just reflects some of my personal preferences that you might find useful for yourself.

Thanks man, there's some good ideas in there. I didn't know a 1A PD would mean I could still boost.

What's the benefit of a bigger AMFU? I've only ever played around with them a couple of times.

For that kind of money you're in Asp territory with longer jumps, better speed, armour and potential for upgrades and dual AFMUs for long exploration missions.

I already have an Asp and have gone as far out as 5,000ly with it and it was great. I just want to fly something different and the T6 feels like the VW Combi van of space.

Here's a cheaper version with a smaller powerplant (because you don't need to power your AFMU or Hangar at the same time as anything else) and C-ranked AFMU and Fuel Scoops (to be cheaper than an Asp).

I did originally have the smaller PP but upgraded it due to the Hangar. You're right though, it doesn't need to be powered up until I've landed.

Updating this thread with my final build.

Managed to just squeeze out a 30ly max jump. Went with the recommendation to lower the powerplant to a 2A but this does mean having to turn on the AFM and Hangar when they are required. This should help with heat management as well which can be an issue in the T6.

This ship will be my explorer for when my baby boy is due in a couple of months and my play time with be much lower and more sporadic so hopefully she serves both of us well.

I call her The Dauntless Inquirer.

A few pics of her in her glorious new paint job.

Is it just me or does the front on photo look like a giant flying robot?

I know I'm late to this thread, but here is the T 6 explorer I'm currently in...http://coriolis.io/outfit/type_6_tr...390p---2i2f.AwRj45SlRI==.Aw1-kA==?bn=Explorer

So far i just passed the Lagoon nebulae on my way to neutron star fields...
Nice build, bare boned, shieldless, no SRVs but if you're not landing on planets then you don't need them and you don't really need shields in the black but for me, these things are worth the 2-3ly loss in jump range.

I'm trying to farm enough minerals to stock up on FSD boost to take with me in case I get the itch to go all the way to Beagle Point. If you can do that with boosts then I don't see an extra light year or two as being that beneficial but I respect your lean build.

That's a cool paintjob, could you post pictures from another angle as well?

I'm flying a Keelback with 23.7 ly jumprange, but most internals are pretty heavy - didn't care much about the jumprange, still I am quite probably over 100kly in my current exploration trip including a visit to Beagle Point. :)

Yeah...it all depends on what you are wanting to accomplish on your trip. For me this time I am wanting to get to neutron star fields as fast as possible with a low financial risk. This trip i wasnt planning on doing any planet exploring.

I like the T6 for exploring as it does have a lot of internals to outfit it the way you want. It also has a good cockpit view.

For a good all around exploring T6, I do like the one you put together.

Oh yeah...one question I have on your build. Why do you need a chaff launcher on an exploration ship?
Just in case I get interdicted on the way back to the bubble. I might be toast anyway but it could give me enough time to get away.

I'll probably just call on Iridium Wing anyway so probably not necessary.

100kly... nice job, that's one helluva trip! I'll post some more pics when I can :)
