Newcomer / Intro Type 6 Insta-kill

Been running a type 6 on rare runs for some time. Karma showed up today in the way of an interdiction where I died in about 10 seconds. So my question is what would be a good defensive load out? I don't care to engage but do want to be able to evade and live long enough to jet (lumber) outta there. My current set up includes only a fuel scoop and 108 tons cargo. I tried to add a shield generator but an getting an error that my hull is too heavy. Any help would be appreciated.

Get the best power plant (helps to keep your ship cooler), power distribution (boost more often), thrusters (gives you better manoeuvrability and max/boost velocities, the latter is the most important in your case). If being interdicted - submit, i.e. idle the throttle and do not perform evasive manoeuvers. In this case your FSD won't fail during interdiction and the cool down is going to be very fast so you should be able to initiate SC much faster unless you get a mass lock. Equip your ship with chaff launchers so that if the enemies rely on turreted or gimballed weapons they will have trouble aiming at you. If you run without the shields then it is better to avoid combat at all costs. T6 and all other traders have weak armour and are very easily destroyed.

As of the error you received trying to buy the shield generator - it is not compatible with your ship. You need a larger shield generator. The minimal size of the shield generator for T6 is 3.

Please post your ship spec (ED:shipyard). Looks like you were trying to fit too low a class of shield. Post it up here and I'm sure you'll get a lot of helpful suggestions re loadout.

[EDIT]

Ninja'd. Meh!

Upgrade thrusters and power distro and you'll boost clear of anything but a cobra. Unless he takes out your thrusters quickly. If you grab a size 4 shield gen you'll have to drop to 96 cargo with your fuel scoop but its down to how safe you want to be...

Why would you remove the shield generator if you weren't even going to fit in more cargo racks?

Are you trading rares, or running regular roots?

Fuel costs for T6 are very low so I find fuel scoop useless there. If I remember correctly almost full refuel costs 3-4k Cr? You can install 4t cargo rack instead of the fuel scoop and at normal average trade profit of 1000k Cr per ton per one direction you will earn more having a cargo rack there instead of the fuel scoop (in one direction of the trading route). Moreover, scooping fuel takes quite some time so you are losing precious time as well, not to mention that you can be interdicted while scooping. Get 8t and 2x4t cargo racks to increase your cargo capacity. You can install a shield generator into the size 3 internal slot if you wish of course. In order to increase the velocity I would install A4 thrusters. I would also install D2 life support and D2 sensors for lower right, which would allow to increase the jump range. No need in hull upgrades as these are heavy and reduce jump range and max velocity of your ship.

I take it defensive weapons are pretty much pointless? Not even torpedoes would do anything in a fight?

Explosive damage against shield was significantly reduced in 1.1 so torpedoes or missiles are going to be useless against shielded enemies. Moreover, such weapons are very expensive. T6 is too weak to fight such ships as a Cobra or Viper, however, it has chances to outrun some of the small ships such as Sidewinder. So it is better to reduce the weight of the ship as much as possible, meaning no weapons. Instead I would recommend a chaff launcher and ECM or a PDT to counter gimballed weapons and guided missiles/torpedoes.

I had cargo racks in there but pulled them out to install a shield and a generator, but decided to get some help first. I am doing rare runs.

Okay in that case i second Aleksej's comments with the exception of the fuel scoop (his advice on the matter is good for normal trading however) and the thrusters. I really don't see the max speed increase in necessary. You can get plenty of speed constantly boosting with D grade thrusters. I'd recommend 2 chaff launchers and one heat sink launcher. Guided missiles won't be much of an issue due to the changes in explosive damage, and you will need the sinks to lower your heat with all the boosting you will be doing trying to escape.

I also recommend either buying an A grade scoop, or getting a class 3 one, you want to spend as little time scooping as possible in a trade ship.

Ok great...thanks for all the suggestions. Got some thinking to do, but I will say I think I will stick with the fuel scoop for now. I just feel better having one. I don't always pay attention to the fuel gage. Had a history with that as a teenager too. Pushed my Camaro more than once to the gas station! Thanks all!

Quick update....I am constantly being interdicted, so I've decided to pull the fuel scoop out and go with added cargo. My new setup is working great and zero repairs with my new shields. Thanks all!

Did you add chaff launchers?

It's good to fire off a chaff when you have been interdicted. It scrambles their sensors so gimbled/turreted weapons can't lock on to you for a period of time.
