Type 6 vs. Hauler - Opinions wanted!

I have a hauler right now and am starting to make some decent cred, but want to get up to a Type 9 or something where I have a further jump distance.

I really want to get a decent cargo fighter, that is to say I want a good fighter with an okay amount of cargo space, but I'm trying use the cargo-specific ships to earn some $$$ to get a better fighter.

Looking for experienced users who've tried to do the same and suggestions on whether a move from a Hauler to Type 6 is worth it, etc.

Thanks for feedback!

Go for the La6. It was 100 ton cargo cap. When it's time to go for Cobra/Viper you have the cash. I use the 6 much like the Hauler. No guns, no equipment. If the brown hits the fan, just run.

Getting Lakon 6 will increase the rate of you getting to Lakon 9 in about 7-10 times taking into account the faster speed and the longer range of Lakon 6.

For trading purposes it's a natural progression. I went Eagle -> Hauler -> Viper -> Cobra -> Type 6 -> Cobra so far (just wanted to see all the ships).

I was pretty fine with the Cobra , but when I realized I could afford a Type VI with enough surplus to use the space it has, I decided to go for it for 1-2 days just to have enough money to comfortably get blown up in quite a few decently fitted Cobras.

For the purpose of making cash, it's great. It's reasonably maneuverable, docking was very comfortably with it thanks to the open cockpit design and the jump range is a huge plus, allowing me to bypass entire systems on previous routes as well as opening up new ones (didn't fit any modules on it, because I deemed it quite useless.).

But yeah - it's just that - a defenseless space truck - never had a problem evading interdictions with it, but sometimes I want to do something else but hauling, so after I felt I had made enough, I went back to the Cobra.

I love the visability, the cargo space and especially the jump distance of the type 6 - if only it had a defence capability other than run, I'd never have left it.

going from the hauler to the 6 is you best option if you're trying to eventually get into a 9 or an Anaconda, you really see your profits jump with that 100 unit cargo hold.

My progression went sidewinder-hauler-type6-type9-anaconda in 5 days, and that wasn't hardcore gaming, just 3-4 hours a night and working high profit trade routes.

It was almost too easy really, now I just keep 15 million credits in the bank and have been pirating with a Viper because i got tired of trade runs and wanted to do something different for a bit.

Thanks guys! A lot of great feedback.

Anyone know what cargo storage is on the Cobra, Viper, etc.?

Go Lakon 6

Lovely ship , enormous range and nice carry, super easy to fly and fast!

As a matter of fact I have a used one , only ever flown on Sundays and the only ever to church, has neved had a bent or a scrape, it was my Grandma's and she's really too old for haulin' now. Good price for you :D

Cheers Cmdr's

Thanks for the info. Good response.

Sidewinder 4t capacity - hauler 16t - Cobra 36t - Lakon 6 100t - Lakon 9 440t!

Your desire for a combat cargo ship is most closely met by the cobra. Although the type 9 can pack a nasty punch with 5 weapon hardpoints.

Yep! I actually crashed my Hauler, then traded my replacement SW for a Cobra (btw - they were only about 56K @ Aulin), then did some really long hauls to Benenik?? Mine, got in a pretty killer firefight with a SW who interdicted me, killed him and grabbed the bounty voucher, then crashed my Cobra and I'm back to a SW with about 8K left.

It was hilarious and fun, but I'm a little disappointed in starting nearly over, but I know what I'm picking up again as soon as I get the credits!

I'm actually not bummed at all because I finally tried out a Cobra. It was a TON of fun to fly and had I been a little more attentive in the station I would still have it, so no harm no foul.

Best to make these mistakes in Beta before the next reset!

The good thing about the L9... It feels like you're flying a ship. You can actually feel the weight as you navigate it about the stars, I love that about it.

Armed to the teeth and it's quite a formidable beast. Not what i'd call an able fighter but one hell of a defender.

Best progression if you want a good stash of credits to "try" things with (for the beta at least) is simply hauler > Type-6 > Type-9. Run the Type-6 until you have enough credit to purchase the Type-9 + Insurance + At least 100 tons of cargo then continue to trade. I didn't run weapons on the Type-6 just heat sinks, then for the Type-9 I just went defensive with heat sink + point defence. Once you have about 10 million credits accumulated you can literally try any ship with any combination of armaments and still have enough to pay the insurance if you lose them.

The best choice for a "cargo fighter" role is either obviously the eagle, or if by "fighter" you just mean being able to hold its own in combat then naturally the anaconda.

hauler loses to type 6 in all aspects, jump range, cargo capacity, hard points...

so if you are a trader there is no question that type 6 is a must, i traded in side->hauler->type6->type9, as those are only trader ships and will give you most income :)

Was typing a reply until I noticed Forgers replay...
So yeah, exactly this. There is no point in compairing the 2. The hauler is a stepping stone towards a type 6, nothing more.

I did the same, but I find myself flitting between trading in a lakon6 and fighting/missioning in a cobra :D

Definately go Type 6. Empty, it can get anywhere in the bubble, and full it still has a decent jump range.

Check my Ship Catalogue tool (link is in my sig, which you can get to via my profile if you have sigs turned off), it has details on all the currently available ships.

How'd you manage that? I traded in my Type 6 for three hours or so last night and pulled about 250,000 credits. Was the market that much more active in the Beta 1 early days? (I was too busy to play after the wipe)
