Type-7 needs some fixin'

(I am sure this topic has come up a million times. My apologies. But it bears repeating, because it's still a problem after all this time)

I actually like the Type-7. It's a neat ship. Great aesthetics for a cargo ship, fantastic cockpit view.

Apparently FDev would like to make money off of the Type-7 microtransactions as well, because it has a lot of skins compared to other ships.

But it has a lot of problems. And that means most people will only ever look at it as a temporary stepping stone, or something to be skipped entirely. It is not at all competitive with other options. There is no objectively good reason to get invested in this ship over the longer term, which means most people won't, which means fewer skins sold overall.

Any and all of the following problems need to be addressed:

  • There is an unused space for a hardpoint on the bottom side of the Type-7.
  • The Type-7 sorely lacks any medium hardpoint. This could live on the top side hardpoint in my opinion. The lack of a medium hardpoint means it cannot core mine. The Type-7 handles pretty dang well and would be a good core miner, but it can't core mine because of this.
  • Owing to the first problem listed, this hardpoint convergence pattern is ridiculous:

  • Due to being a few meters too tall, it cannot land on medium landing pads, meaning it cannot land at outposts. This makes it significantly worse at its primary role, that being trading; for all other intents and purposes, it is basically a medium ship, but the game treats it as a large.
  • The infamous, atrocious heat problems. The Type 7 overheats itself when it jumps. Basically every jump. Putting the new v1 FSD into it makes this problem even worse. I had heard that this is because, long ago, the Type-7 was only ever meant to have a size 4 FSD, but this was upgraded to 5, but the native heat-venting capabilities were never updated to compensate for this. (Someone more in the know, feel free to correct me if wrong).

I don't know why these things are the way they are, but they seems like they shouldn't be, and they severely hurt the Type-7 overall. With the possible exception of the 'too tall' problem, I think most of these would be pretty simple to fix.

Mod the powerplant in a different way and you wil almost not overheat....

Great ship. A joy to fly.. Lots of drawbacks.... Still love it

If you fixed it, it'd stop being for cool kids though 😉. The overheating is the biggest thing for me since, despite its grest jump range, I'm concerned it'll devour itself a bit on long range exploration. Mind you, I like life on the edge so perhaps that's a plus...

The T-7 is great because of the reasons listed in the OP, not despite them!
Without its glaring issues and defects, it would be broken!

I love the Type 7!

Sometimes manufacturers release a model that has...problems, in the long run that often becomes part of their charm. Consider the Reliant Robin for instance, three wheels prone to rolling over when cornering fast, tiny engine, and yet sold for 30 years and one of the most popular fiberglass cars in the world. Without its idiosyncracies it wouldn't have attracted anywhere near the love it gets from a lot of people.

Just consider the Type 7 the Reliant Robin of the ED universe. If you want a hauler that can land on medium pads and carry as near as much the same cargo get a Python, if you want a unique ship with issues and idiosyncrasies, get a Type 7!

Exactly.

The Type 7 is perfect as it is, with its imperfections!

I like the look of all the Lakon ships. They have a late 80s, early 90s scifi appeal. So despite the issues, I wanted a type 7 for the collection.

I use my 7 for painite mining. I’m not a fan of mining so I don’t care that mine mining doesn’t yield more than 120 tons. I’m mainly there for material and the painite, osmium, and platinum are extra.

engineering the thrusters, power plant, helped with the heat issue. I use only 2 of the small hard points instead of 4. With 2 4A collector controllers, the timing is decent between roid deplete and limpits collection rate.

i know a clipper, python, or krait would be better, but then I would cool looking expensive ships sitting and not doing much. Because I hate mining. The 7 looks like a mining ship.

Only thing I would change is to make it short enough to be a med ship. After that it's fine.

I never want to see them fix the heat issue. It adds so much flavor to the type 7

T7- the fed dropship of lakon. Awesome concept- horrid implementation. (Federal DROPship cant drop anything, T7 is a mining/trade ship that cant land at outpost or do deep core) needs a buff
