Ship Builds & Load Outs Type-7 Transporter, what was wrong?

Hi

I just bought a Type 7 after grinding with a Type-6. Had read some (old) forum entries and apparently the Type-7 is (was) meant to a) outrun NPC pirates and b) buy itself free by dropping some cargo. At least in 2015, thx Google.

So I built my ship and went out for a test run, Jameson Orbital to Cubeo. After 10 jumps, I step in don't know what system, a NPC pirate intercepts me at the star and I am blown out of sight within 10 seconds. I couldn't even try to drop some cargo as the damned crate went boom when I was ready to jettison. No outrunning. Not even having enough time to drop cargo. Just bang-bang-BOOOM in my bloody first trip with a load of Consumer Technology.

"Uninmpressed" is not exactly conveying my feelings about the Type-7 at the moment. :(

But maybe it was my outfitting what went wrong. So here it is, any comments/suggestions on the survival aspect of it?

I've been playing this game since early Beta and I'm fairly sure I've never tried a Type 7, in fact just looking at the specs put me off poor armour, shields, weapons and undersized power plant and PD, the base ship limitations also mean it'd be near impossible to engineer any worthwhile improvements.

At this price point (around 20 mil) I'd go for the FDS, mine has been heavily engineered and it's a tough medium trade/mission ship a lot less cargo capacity granted but a lot more survivable.

The Asp X again less cargo but a massive increase in range so trade runs can be completed faster and it's got decent shields and enough speed to escape most attackers

Sry to hear about your loss commander,
I would recommand you to forget the Type-7.
He is just a pure Death-Trap. He is slow, weak shields, sluggish and all these bad things and way too expensive for all this.
Try about the Type-6 here:

The Type-6 has a bit lesser Cargo but much better speed and is much more agile for lesser money :)
Also his jumprange is awesome.

After the Type-6 you can go for an ASP, a Clipper (if you have the rank) or a trade-Python. But forget this Type-7 :D

In a Type-6 you can win interdictions very easy, you can run away very fast during you spread some mines and he has a much smaller hitbox.

Have an eye which missions you accept, the delivery missions will always have additional persistant pirates (80%) or a destination change (20%). You don't want to get a pirate from an Elite ranked mission in a small freighter ;)

Ps:
Did i already mentioned? Forget this Type-7. It's a Death-Trap.

Sorry to hear that CMDR.

I assume you are familiar with the escape procedure? 4 pips to sys, boost and high wake (jump to another system).

I would perhaps replace the point defence with more shield boosters and get rid of weapons, no point. But your build seems ok. I would perhaps have waited until you could have A rated more stuff but can't see that making much of a difference if it happened that quickly.

I used the T7 as a stepping stone to the T9 back before long range smuggling/hauling was a thing. It was a death trap even then. With the new level of interdictions from pirates and their increased combat abilities it is possibly no longer viable, but I don't know for sure.

I'm tempted to buy one and do some trading in it just to see how bad it is. With my rank I'll be being interdicted by Elite FDLs lol.

Thank you for your answers Commanders! [smile]

They reinforce my anecdotal but strong impression that the Type-7 is not fit for the realities of long hauls and thus it is better to avoid it. Meanwhile I've sold the Type-7 and A-graded my old Type-6 outfit, which certainly can evade interdiction, run away if intercepted, and even kill smaller craft with mines.

Since I still want a larger cargo capacity than a Type-6, probably my next step will be the Clipper, I'm like 60% Master so will be faster to rank up for it than grind the credits for a Python.

Basically, freighters are nothing more than flying coffins in this game. The game itself means it is all but useless and will end up costing you more than you make, so yer probably better off using non freighters and just loading up on cargo racks, which may be less glamorous but it'll be a helluva lot more practical in the long term.

That was my impression after seeing what happens to ships without enough shields (like my soon demised and departed Asp X) and the Type-7 confirmed it fully. Admittedly I don't have much skill dodging fire, but so far looks like you will be hit a lot and the larger your shield, the larger your life expectancy (specially since chaff and ECM can't be binded to a key and must be trigger-fired instead, an interesting design choice). That's why I love my Vulture, I'm learning to combat with it since that enormous shield leaves some room for mistakes.

Sigh. Lost another CMDR to Frontier's hatred of the T7...

I love that ship, love it, but yeah it's just a death trap these days. She desperately needs better shields to be able to survive in this galaxy now. Doesn't help things that the OP's build seems nearly identical to my build when I first bought my T7. The days of a budget built trader are long gone now. That said, even my current build would have met the same fate.

My current build btw, for whatever good would do. This is like the third refit to try to save her.

Sad. Really sad. I really do miss my baby. Come on Frontier, please just look at the Type 7 again. Tougher shields, that's all I'm asking. Please.

I used the Type 7 for mining for a long time, then went to a ASP then Python.

Mining is a interesting fit, but beware, pirates kill you easily.

I've been back in my T6 for a couple of weeks and I was saving for T7 on the basis of extra cargo capacity. I got the money together and then, after checking some online specs, decided that, on a cost/benefit analysis and risk, the T7 wasn't worth the money despite the extra cargo capacity.

I'm going to keep the money aside and am presently in the T6 slinging tonnage on the Sothis/Ceos run and saving for a Python instead.

I loved my type 7, never ran with shields and managed to get out of most interdictions and out run most pirates with all pips in engines and just boost and boost and chaff till fsd was ready to jump them off I went.
Worst case I blow up, but managed to make it to most destinations with more than 50% hull, if I got interdicted. only lost my type 7 a couple of times before I upgraded to a type 9 and I'm going to convert my type 7 into a mining vessel.

The time of shieldless traders are gone since 2.1
Now you die nearly instant in a T-7 without shields and he can't outrun anything.
Even a good old sidey is a nightmare for the T-7

Was using my type 7 till the start of September, when I finally got enough for my type 9, but as I have said in other posts think I'm lucky when it comes to not getting interdicted or if I am being able to boost out chaffing like a gooden
