Type-9 - a very specialized tool with some serious limitations

So I went and bought one, here are a few facts and opinions:

  • Out of the box it'll go 6.62 LY full, boo.
  • It'll get above 11 LY w/ 300+ tons with a B7 drive
  • With the stock thrusters it'll roll... eventually.
  • Unless you really need to haul a LOT of stuff short distances - that 256 ton rack is 3M alone - get a Type 7, less cargo space but better for everything else, very likely including credits/hour on the same route.

Great view out the front though...

With the largest drive and a stripped down loadout, you can just about carry 500 tons 14 ly in one jump. But yeah, anything over 30-40 light years is the purview of smaller trade ships. But in that range, the space cow is the cash cow. It can bring in up to 4 million an hour, at least (based on my experience with a 1400/1300 22 ly trade route).

The low manoeuvrability of the ship makes you fly differently from all the others which I found quite fun. Yaw needs to be used a lot more as the roll rate is so low.

The thing I disliked most about the Type-9 wasn't entirely the ships fault. Docking in it is annoying and not because it's big but because the NPC's don't treat it as such. All the other ships you can just go around the NPC's with a little careful flying but not so with the Type-9. Worse if one of them does bump you they have a nasty tendency to push you into the cow catcher and the little wing tips get snarled up on the cow catchers 3d mesh from which you can't escape. You end up trapped like a fly on a spiders web and this can be very expensive when the station takes umbrage to you loitering around the entrance. :D

Haha. How long did it take the station to kill you?!?

That's why I'd like to see an A6 chrome air horn for gently suggesting to everyone to consider making a little room ;-)

Pass through the docking bay at low speed. NPC will avoid you. Except anacondas and t9s))

The Type 9 can be unwieldy to dock, but it makes up for it in that small and medium ships might as well not exist if they get in your way. They'll just bounce off your shields, or be pushed along with the space cow. Even the smaller large ships are nothing but bugs to the space cow. I once got a T7 stuck to my shields and had to scrape it off on the side of the station like dog crap off your shoe. Nothing but Anacondas and other T9s can stand in the way of the space cow.

Ive owned 3 cows since Gamma (and lost about 24 million quid chopping them lol)

Gertrude was my best effort

I believe out all the ships I have flown so far, the Type 9 feels the most right. Its a very big brute of a ship and it moves that way. I think FD got it perfect when they did its flight model. With that said the ship does not work for all trade routes. You have to go out in a smaller ship and find the right route for it then bring in the Type 9. If you go looking for trade routes in your Type 9 you will go broke before you find one. I think the Type 9 shines in any route that is under 9Ly... anything much further apart and the fuel cost is going to eat a lot of your profits up. (250k) to fill her up.

Dude, fuel scoop.
