Type of Controller

I've heard that for the best immersion you need a joystick controller. What one would be best suited for the job? (I am looking for a cheap but decent joystick as I do not have a lot of cash)

You need to have a joystick? It's a stupid lie. Test out joysticks and other control methods, and pick the one that you feel the most comfortable with.

Best Stick for this game and that are quite cheap compared to others are the
Thrustmaster X Hotas.

I was actually looking at that one on Amazon. One last thing: After I have installed the joystick (I do not have one yet as I am waiting for the Thrustmaster to come back in stock on the 14th) do I still use the mouse and keyboard to move around the cockpit/select different things like lock destination and retract landing gear?

As soon as I get a joystick I will test out different controls: Keyboard & Mouse/ Joystick. Will an Xbox 360 controller work aswell?

My brother uses an xbox controller and feels no need change. I started with keyboard/mouse and hagted it, moved onto a ps3 controller and hated it less, then forked out for an X52 hotas, and loved it. Try a few methods to decide which one's right for you - but for me the 'stick is the most intuitive.

If you decide on a joystick, there's HEAPS of "which joystick is the best" threads on here for you to read (use the search function) and pretty much everyone rates their own stick (no surprise). Basically they all work and they all do a good job. Figure out how much you're willing to spend on a stick and how many buttons you want it to have and go from there.

Every joystick is different and i suggest you look for a place/store where you can get your hands on some and try what is most comfortable for you.

I'm using a Saitek Cyborg Evo. It's pretty old and I've had it for many years but it's still in perfect condition and works great for ED.

You don't need to go on a mad spending spree to make the most of it.

I was using a saitek st290, which was fine, but old and had only a few buttons.

I have now bought the thrustmaster hotas x and I am loving it.

You will still need to use the keyboard for some controls, I haven't configured everything yet, so I am still using mouse for the Galaxy map.

Only had it since mid last week so still playing with set-up

Using EdTracker instead of the POV stick to look around and using POV to navigate menus.

Saitek X52 Pro was my first and preferred Hotas, ive tried Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog, loved this stick, just a little large, and no twist function which i liked and got used to on the X52.
Using the Saitek X55 at the moment and liking it too.

To each his own, I guess.

In my case, I tried using a keyboard and mouse, and I didn't like it at all :D

I then used a Xbox 360 wireless controller, which I found was much better, but still lacking in axes, buttons, and worst of all, wasn't helping immersion.

Just bought a X52 pro from Amazon (at relatively low price of 125€ even, considering it is sold around 200 € right now, Saitek having created a vacuum to make room for the X55), and it's another game entirely. I'm enjoying it very much.

That being said, the game is totally playable with other controllers, and it really depends of the "feel" and immersion you want while playing.

Switching to a HOTAS should only be considered if you wanna learn to play the game in a very different way, and if you have the money to spend in such a controller.

I just tried the Mouse & Keyboard controls and christ are they awful. I couldn't figure out how to retract my weapons, when I looked at the side panels I couldn't do anything with them apart from look at them. Because of this I got shot by the space station after trying to lower my guns. I had a 360 controller plugged in but the controls were unresponsive apart from the Start button. How do you get a 360 controller to work?

First make sure it shows up in the windows "devices and printers" bit... there's a bit there where you can test all the axis & buttons.

Assuming it's working right under windows (it should be, it's just a basic controller) you start ED and get into the "options" screen by pressing "esc", then get into "controller". At the top choose "custom", then go down the list of controls clicking the mouse in the box for every control you want to set and then pressing the controller button you want it set to. This will also show you the keyboard layout for all the controls you won't have enough buttons for on the 360 controller.

Shouldn't the controls for a 360 controller be built into the game? Having to manually do it yourself seems a bit too much of a hassle. I did look into the controls in the menu and they are confusing. There are way too many controls on the screen.

There's quite a few of us on here using the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Relatively cheap but I like it. I would like a separate throttle from stick at some stage but for now the 3D Pro is great .

they are. :D You juste have to tell the game you want ot use them.
There's even a map of said controls in the Sidewinder owner's manual.

I found the controls, but my 360 controller still is not responding to me pressing buttons or moving the analog sticks.
