Newcomer / Intro Uable to make hyperspace Jump.

I am doing the docking and travel training mission.I leave the station, leave mass lock, retract hardpoints/gear/cargo scoop. Lock destination (Eranin). Align ship. Charge Drive. Advance throttle and nothing happens. The ship accelerates but that is all. The NAV screen says "Charged Engaging Supercruise". Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

It sounds (or reads in this case) as if you're entering Supercruise rather than Hyperspace.

Hyperspace jumps you between systems using your Frame Shift Drive (FSD) and supercruise is how you travel within a system once you leave a station and normal travel speed.

Are there thin yellow bars/posts on your screen that move as below.

If so, you are in supercruise. Check your key bindings and ensure you have bindings for both ( iirc the default is 'J' )

EDIT: Not my picture, lifted from 'the web' as I don't have any shots in SC

Hi, because Supercruise and Hyperspace Jump are used so much in ED I bound them to the largest buttons on the keyboard. Spacebar for Supercruise (Engage/Disengage) and Right Shift for Hyperspace Jump. The default J is there as well. Options/Controls/Flight Miscellaneous.

It's worth noting many keys can be bound for more than 1 function, so for example I also use Spacebar to select in menus, as well as using the usual mouse left click and fire on the Joystick/Hotas. That way I'm covered whatever the situation in-game. Fly safe Commander! o7

Bit of a clarification for a confused CMDR. There are two types of FTL (faster than light) travel - in-system and between systems.

In-system flight, aka Supercruise.
This is the mean to travel vast distances within given star system. Normally your ship can achieve few hundred m/s of speed. Flying 728 Ls (light seconds) distance would take you weeks and months. To skip that ED enables you to enter "Supercruise" - special mode in which your speed is measured in "c", speed of light. At first it's in fractions of "c". The more you fly uninterrupted (gravity fields from stars and planets slow you down), the higher "c" count gets. Max is 2001c, afaik, which means 2001 times faster than speed of light. Usually you won't get that far to see those values, expect some cases. With Supercruise covering those 728 Ls distance takes mere few minutes.

Between system flight, aka "Frame Shift Drive" (Friendship Drive)
Ok, in-system flight we covered, but how to travel between stars? When you open galaxy map and select a star, be it close or far away, you get distance to that star given in LY - light years. Given that you can reach Supercruise speed of 2001x the speed of light, going to the next star 5 LYs away would take you... about a year real time. To solve that we have "Frame Shift Drive" that allows us to travel stellar distances within seconds (in fact this is hidden in the plain sight loading screen - observe how you're unable to interact with your ship panels while in transit). Frame Shift Drive range comes out directly from your ship's FSD module, the better, the farther you can jump. Add engineering and another module - guardian booster, and you can increase your range considerably. Stock Imperial Clipper has ~8 LYs of range. Lightweight build with top FSD, with engineering and booster has nearly 52 LYs.

Anyway, got sidetracked. From what you wrote looks like you engaged Supercruise (in-system flight mode) instead of FSD mode. Check your key bindings and press "the other left" button to make stellar jump.

I am still unable to go to supercruise or hyperspace. I bound supercruise to the backspace key and hyperspace jump to the spacebar. When I push backspace the FSD charges and nothing happens there are no short vertical lines on the sides. If I push backspace again the it shuts down. When I push the spacebar nothing happens. If I push the "J" key it charges the FSD and if I then push the spacebar it shuts down. Thanks for your patience guys.

Here is a video I made for you, a walk-through of the docking and travel training mission - can you see anything that might help you?

Mission is to leave station and jump into supercruise, you do not need to lock on to Eranin, simply charge the FSD for supercruise and throttle up.

When in supercruise you are asked to select Eranin and then to charge for hyperspace jump.

Don't charge the drive for supercruise and then push hyperspace, that wont work.

Well it looks like the J key is still bound to one of the FSD charging routes.

When you press an FSD button again before you have gone into either jump or supercruise it will shut down the FSD and stop the charging.

The short vertical lines only appear when you are in supercruise.

I watched the video and found something different. In the video he goes full throttle, charges the FSD, and then the ship goes into supercruise. I advance the throttle, charge the FSD, and then I get the message ALIGN WITH SHIP TRAJECTORY. I thought that meant aim the ship at ERANIN but this time I have not yet entered ERANIN in the NAV.

Hi, after you pressed backspace again which then shut down Supercruise charging, the reason nothing happened when you pressed space was because no valid Hyperspace target was selected. You select a system you want to jump to either by using the Galaxy map or from the left hand Nav panel. It's also possible to select a frame shift wake after it's been scanned to chase after someone but that's another subject.

Once that's done your ship needs to be at max throttle, either in normal travel or supercruise and pointing roughly at the selected system. You'll notice you get a bit of info on your HUD about the system you're jumping to, the idea being you could abort if it looks like you could run into trouble.

There are other reasons why you may not make the jump, the obvious ones being not enough fuel, your FSD can't actually jump the distance asked of it and being mass locked to something. But if you have the fuel and you are moving unhindered and the system is within range then you should make it. This is why the maximum jump range your ship currently has becomes a crucial piece of info that every Commander needs to know about their ship(s). The easiest way to see that is the right hand (Systems)menu/Ship/Statistics. It shows your current maximum jump range and the unladen range which is basically the theoretical maximum in its present state with no baggage so to speak.

I won't go into how to increase that range as there are tons of excellent tutorials already out there. If you've selected a journey that involves multiple jumps then the default key is N to select the next jump. That's very handy for example if you decide to go and check out an object or some other target etc. within the system, all you have to do is press N to get back on track for your next jump, assuming those conditions above have been met. Good luck!

I found the solution. If I use engine boost after I get the ALIGN WITH SHIP TRAJECTORY message it will force the ship's trajectory to align with the way the ship is pointing and it will immediately go into supercruise.

Yes if you are manoeuvring whilst the FSD is charging (s/c or h-jump) then your actual motion might not be in line with where your ship is pointing - the FSD requires velocity aligned with the ship. (Look up Alcubierre drive if you want a "kind of" basis for the FSD.)

Sounds like you are on your way.... [up]
