This has been happening to me since exactly yesterday. Mostly with gas giants. I scan them and then they go completely black and it weirds me tf out.

Credits wise, there is a point to scanning gas giants with water/ammonia life, right? Please tell me I'm not wasting my time on those.

If by "scanning" you mean flying close and throwing probes with DSS at them, then you're wasting your time.
Just using FSS on them is quick enough to not be a waste of time, IMO.
