UI Panels and a Gamepad

Hello Commanders!

Playing with the Alpha 1 build today and having a blast, but have a question regarding the default controls for an X-Box style gamepad.

Currently the UI panels are mapped to the '1', '2', and '3' keys and not to the gamepad which is a little annoying, i noticed in the control binding menu that holding down the 'b' button is UI focus, but it doesn't seem to do much exept zoom out a little bit. Does anyone know If I can access the panels with the gamepad without sacrificing the other bindings?

I seem to remember the default 360 pad configuration when selected maps everything major. I use the side panels fine with the pad when I use it.

If I remember correctly you press the UI focus and then use the left d-pad, or right stick (apologies, can't remember which one!)

Sounds obvious, but check you actually have the right controller selected in the options (control pad with yaw?).

To be honest, I have a CH products HOTAS (Fighterstick, Pro-Throttle, and Pro-Pedals), and I don't have enough triggers, hats, and axis to do everything I need to do with my ship. I think I've spent more time with CH's scripting language to make my HOTAS "smart" (changing what a control does based the context) and adding extra controls than I have actually playing the game.

Granted, I've only been in Alpha only a week, I work full time, and I need to squeeze in other things, but I haven't finished the tutorial (aka combat) missions yet. Mostly because I've gotten stuck on two of the missions: the stealth one, and now the Anaconda one. And because I figure Alpha 4 will be coming soon, which will bring a multi-player wipe anyways, so I'm in no hurry to.

Fortunately, I actually enjoy that kind of thing, but I think that it should tell you something about the complexity of this game. There are a lot of ways to control your ship, and I find myself using most of them.

My advice to you is that if your controller has any kind of software that lets you map keystrokes to your controls, try to make your controls do double duty. One of my favorite methods that the CH control manager has is "shift key" functionality. That way, you have two controls for the price of one. If your software has that functionality, use it. If not... good luck. I, for one, simply can't imagine using the limited number of controls of a game pad.

Quick tip for the anaconda one, get in behind it where it's beam laser can't hit you and let rip!!!

I use a PS3 controller masquerading as an XBox one.

Works fine, there's a button that puts you in panel mode and you move left right or down to see the panels/scanner with the d-pad.

I've recently added a shed load more buttons!

Haha great idea! I'm actually managing fine with the gamepad now, seems to have enough buttons to enjoy gamepley. To be honest as awesome as the joysticks look, there just isn't enough space on my desk, and I'm slightly intimidated by them!

I'll probably play with joystick (right hand) and keyboard (left hand) to have enough buttons and key combinations.

Do you really need all those buttons? I'm not convinced enough to shell out 100 quid for an X-52 without knowing for sure, and I plan on buying an OR when they go retail, and I reckon joystick + keyboard + OR will be a nightmare. Gamepad is just fine for me at the moment...besides I'm on a budget :)
