General / Off-Topic UK embrace for the coldest winter in 30 years.

Britain could be in for a new beast from the east as experts predict this winter will be "the coldest weather in 30 years".

Temperatures could reach as low as -14C with “snow event after snow event” expected to hit parts of the UK from as early as later on this month.

If it heats up: Global warming aaaaaarg!
If it cools down: Climate change aaaaaaarg!
If weather stays the same: aaaaaaaarg!

- 14° is quite normal in Europe although less frequent in recent years.

In 1945 in the Ardennes, the American troops fought with -17 ° during several weeks and without equipment for the winter.

I wonder how they did ?

Amazing how a little snow can shut down areas not used to it. Coming from upstate New York, even unusual levels of snowfall rarely caused major issues...they'd just plow more often and dump more salt on the roads. However, when I lived in Delaware or Arkansas, you'd think the world was ending if they had half an inch on the ground. Worse, everyone with a 4x4 thought they were somehow magically immune to ice, and the two days of actual snow I saw a year in AR probably resulted in more idiots in ditches than in a whole winter in more northerly locales.

Yes, that is true, however the golf stream has always fluctuate bringing cold winters to the island from time to time.

I think his point was that the same broad warming trend will result in colder weather some places, during some parts of the year.

The thermohaline currents helping drive the gulf stream have significantly reduced in strength as the arctic has warmed (less sea ice, less salinity gradient) and this could have the effect of disrupting some of the warmer ocean currents responsible for moderating the climate of the British isles. The potential effects of this are still not well understood though.
