Ultra wide ring

I've encountered a gas giant with an ultra wide 3rd ring. It is even beyond the orbiting moons.
But I cannot scan the ring, using DSS, for it tells me that the ring is too far. Nor from the gas giant location, nor from the close proximity location to the ring.
So, what are my opions?

You mean if you park* your ship right next to the ring, ie 10km above it flying along it, you still can't fire a probe into it? I guess that's because it is "too far" from the centre of the planet and that's how it decides probe distance?

So that makes me wonder if the best option would be to fly inward until you are on the very edge of the sphere that has been deemed to be in range, and then see if you can find a way to fire at that ring. There might be something weird going on with the pathfinding so you have to aim somewhere other than the ring, firing outwards?

* 30 km/sec rather than 0 obviously

Yeah, there's a max range you can target the probe, the inner radius of the outer ring is over 11m kms, which makes the inner edge of the ring 18ls from the center of the planet, that is way out of range of the probes, they simply won't target the rings at that range even if you get the extreme edge of the range to probe the planet.

I am going to try to scan this ring.

Edit: It's 7k light years from my CMDR, who has to cobble together a ship with decent jump range.

@Lord Kril I was going to try to complete as much of the scan as possible, then find a moon in proximity to the outer ring and deliberately miss the moon to hit the ring, which used to be able to complete the scan on the body the ring is nominally attached to.

Good luck!

I'm out of there, already. But, if you find tritium, just let me know. If I'm not mistaken, there was some Void Opal and Platinum hotspots in the inner rings.
