Ultrawide ED

In the option menu we can set the view field, and if you play with a 16:9 monitor its all very useful.

My question to my fellow commanders would be if someone have tried a 21:9 monitor and if the field of view change anything from lets say a 16:9 monitor? Also the refresh rate on my monitor are 75 Hz, but if I check the spec on some of the 21:9 monitors they are in the very low 60 Hzish range. How is blur on these monitors and can we gain anything by just chancing the field of view in the options, when using a 16:9 monitor?

Or can I just buy a TV of a good quality and use that instead?

Commander in doubt :S

21:9 get wider fov but at the left and right edges it has some fish eye distortion effects, not that annoying for me but it's there...

otherwise 21:9 > 16:9, I just can't go back.

I have played the game at 7680x1080 and there is indeed distortion at the edge... but EVERY game does that in wide dispays. Currently I play at 2560x1080 (21:9) and it looks great. However.... Oculus wins over every other display type.

I really like super-widescreen and play that way all the time. There is some distortion at the edges of the screen - although this isn't present in all games, but Elite suffers from it quite badly. I haven't notice any blur, but then I haven't been looking for it.

All of my videos are recorded in 21:9 which should give you some idea of what it looks like.

FWIW i believe the field of view is vertical, so setting it at 70 for a 16:9 aspect will result in the same vertical FoV as 21:9 or even 48:9 (typical triple head aspect ratio), but the game expands out sideways to sill the extra space.

If you don't need to play above 2560x1080 then the Benq 3501 which runs at 144hz is probably one of the highest rated gaming monitors out there right now. It's 34 inches wide and has one of the most aggressive curves on the market. It only gets beat by monitors like the Acer X34 due to resolution and Gsync but the Acer costs hundreds of dollars more. Asus has one coming out soon as well which will be very expensive like the Acer. Most of the reviewers think Gsync is unnecessary on screens that run at that speed. I don't think I've seen a bad review on the Benq screen yet and it is 100% geared towards gaming.

Quick question for you Mr OA (love your YT channel btw) - which do you prefer? ultra wide monitor, multi monitor or VR?

I used to use 3 monitors. All 23 inch 1080p ones. The game looked ok but I missed the vertical FOV. I'm now using a 42 inch 4K TV instead and 4K wins over triple screen IMO.

Waiting patiently for an oculus.

VR is in a totally different league to a monitor - it's very hard to compare. VR literally puts you right in the game. If I could get a super high resolution VR headset (4K? :D ) and a PC to run it, I would choose VR every time.

But in terms of monitors - I would never want to go back to a regular monitor. 21:9 monitors are fantastic, and I would prefer that to 3x 16:9 monitors. (That said I would also like to try 3x 21:9 monitors).

Saving my pennies for one. Maybe at Tax return season.

Won't go any lower than 2K per eye, that is for sure.

I have the Dell 34" curved monitor. I love it, the picture is clear (No blur) and when set to the "Multimedia" mode, the colors are gorgeous. I also adjusted the briteness so that dark colors appear darker without loosing detail. Most monitors out of the box are set to their brightest settings which do not always represent the best the monitor can do. It is worth your time to find a safe spot and experiment a bit to get the monitor settings to your liking. If you get things too far out of adjustment, you can always set it back to the factory defaults and try again.

Triple 2560x1080 21:9 monitors.

I'm thinking about getting the Samsung S34E790C. Reviews say it has very good blacks (no IPS glow as the Dell and Acer), which is important for me (since i'm mainly using it for ED).

Has anyone experience with this screen?
