Its a bug, (they know about it) report it and the only option is to abandon it
Unless he has smaller ship with at least that amount of cargo space. Then he could swap ships.
Technically, you can transfer into another ship, providing that ship has enough space for whats in your hold.

I've had several of these big ship redirect to small pad missions now. They're very irritating.
The whole 'urgent update' part of missions seems really broken to me. I get double messages about time bonuses regularly where the first one says 'get here in 0 minutes and you'll get a bonus'. Or redirects to small pads.. or redirects to '#insertsystemnameplaceholderhere'. The list goes on..unfortunately.

This particular issue is officially being looked into. Hopefully the fix will come soon.
In the meantime, every experienced missioneure does deliveries in medium ships.
Actually, with a couple billion made from trading and missions so far I would call myself experienced,thanks.
I have 200 units of assorted mod related cargo in my hold and still have space for 250 units of other stuff.. No medium ship is gonna help with that.
Any experienced player would just dump the 1 in 50 missions where this happens and move on.

I meant a person that experienced this type of mission's misbehaviour.
It just happens, from time to time and if you haven't experienced it before, it's frustrating. That's why it's better to do it in small ship.

ya i do that as soon as Gutamaya builds an medium or small ship can hold 40+ tons of cargo and the cargo transfer works 100% of the time.
