Unable to Assign Keyboard Keys to controls

We have a Keyboard attached to our PS4. We can use it for navigation on the PS4 and within Elite Dangerous we can similarly use it for navigation etc.

Main Menu > Options > Controls - keyboard Enter can be used to initiate a change on a Control but won't accept any keyboard keys as an option.

Why is this the case? Is there anyway to use our keyboard to assign control keys? This would make life so much easier in the game and put us on a par with PC players.

The keyboard can only be used for text input, there is no support to bind to controls unfortunately.

I don't know why it so hard to understand that a console is not a pc. OK, there both "Computer's" but then again so is my watch, why can't I play ED on my watch, DUH!

It's not so much that keyboards can't be used that way on console, they can (the FF MMO is fully compatible with a keyboard), it's just that FDev haven't enabled that control option. Their choice, it is their game after all.

Rubbish. It's a lot cheaper to buy a USB keyboard than a HOTAS, and the HOTAS vs DS4 is a much greater imbalance for many players.

You're validating my point. HOTAS is so expensive, that very few people will actually buy it. As for KBM, everybody has one. That's why it would become a big imbalance problem.

Video gamming has got to be one of if not the cheapest form of things one can do. The best rig is cheaper than a boat, motor, trailer, truck. Ever buy a new set of golf clubs or had to replace a putter. Where can one buy a good baseball glove as cheap as a hotas? Etc. etc. etc.

Cracks me up how one will spend a large amount of money on bobble heads, paint schemes, etc. But complain about a hotas price.

You know I wouldn't be surprised if it's just not possible, I mean I play plenty of games which could conceivably use a keyboard and mouse (or at least a keyboard) for more convenient input, and none of them do it. All text input seems to have to go through one of those PS4 text input dialogs, so maybe it's just not possible for games to receive keyboards / mice as direct input by design. I guess it makes sense.

I don't entirely agree on the imbalance.

Elite is one of the few games where control method is really not that important, because of the way it is set up, take kb/m, mouse controls a virtual joystick and such. There are still plenty of bind options left on PS4 controller, with context menu's to make it do just fine, add analog control sticks that is has, it is in some ways better then a kb/m, there might be differences but in terms of 'controlling' the game itself I don't see them as that great, kb/m has an advantage when it comes to number of keybinds possible, but that's really it.

The game I mentioned does, and it's not the only to do so.

However, it's probably easier to develop a game using the in-built PS system api to take inputs as we see in ED (for basic text inputs).

I'm a bit of a hypocrite, one reason i dislike pc with console crossplay is the more varied and better control options pc has available, yet since playing elite i desperately want keyboard binding(which not every ps4 user has despite kb being cheap),fdev did a good job but it isn't perfect.

With the sheer amount of controls available in the options, this is crying out for keyboard support. Project Cars does it, so it's not something that can't be done.
