Newcomer / Intro Unable to Make Docking Requests

[SOLVED]

I just started, and I'm in Solo Mode to get the feel for how the game works before I go jumping into Open.

For some reason, every Outpost and Station I come across won't give me the option to Request Docking, and I'm within 7km and everything.

Most definitely I'm doing something wrong or forgetting a vital step, but I have no idea what...

Hello, welcome to the forum and the Sim. You may have tried this but, open left panel and go to contacts. Click on the station you want to request docking at. scroll down to "request docking" and click on it. You should get a voice saying request granted or denied. If it says denied there could be a few problems. One problem is your ship may be to big (if you have a large ship) for the landing pads at that station. The stations pads may be full at the time and you have to wait for a pad to become open. I watch the station and when I see a pad light up then a ship raise from it I request landing again. Hope this helps. :)

This is in Solo Mode, and I thought Solo Mode gave you access to all Docking areas?

No, the problem isn't finding the Left Panel... literally, the option to request docking isn't there!

I restarted and still having this issue.

I play Solo and my recommendations work there. I have not tried to land at a station that had pads to small for my ship but that could be why you do not get the option to request landing. Large stations have all 3 pad sizes but smaller stations and outposts may have Medium and Small pads only.

I'm sure they would work, normally... I guess this is an aberration.

I'm piloting the noob Sidewinder, and I'm pretty sure that's meant to fit on any landing pad...

Since you are new I don't suspect that landind pad sizes are an issue here, and you say you don't have hardpoints deployed and that you are well within the 7 km to the station....
if all is true and you still can't find the station under contacts in your left panel and not choose to request landing then you must have a bug whitch you should rise a tickets to fdev to resolve and or reinstall the game because you cannot ply the game if you cannot request landing....

ps i asume you have tried out at several different stations just incase you've become hostile to the ruling faction of a specific station... ?

I thought I also had the issue until I found out I was being dumb.

On your left Panel, there are TWO tabs that show your station.
1. Your navigation Tab. This is usually the Tab you use to choose your supercruise destination.
2. Your Contacts Tab. This is where you need to ask for clearance.

After playing for many hours I brain farted and tried to initiate Docking from Clicking on the Station Name in the Navigation tab and only got the unlock destination and super cruise options. I was completely confused. What had I done to lock myself out of George Lucas station? Was this George's revenge for the grief I gave him for making Greedo shoot first?

I even went to another system, docked normally and came back and made the same silly mistake. When I was just about ready to make an illegal pad run, I then went to contacts tab to check on surrounding security and then realized my mistake.

Contacts tab...Contacts tab....Contacts tab....

I'm not saying that's whats happening to you, but it happened to me, and I felt foolish for awhile. I've since made amends with George Lucas and his Namesake station. I can still enjoy his re-imaged Star Wars AND I have full use of George Lucas station's wonderful variety of high velocity projectile weaponry....

If you hit Contacts Tab, and click on station name and you DON'T see docking option, I'd like to see a screenshot.

Thank you, everyone, for your patience, and thank you 100thMonkey and p.opus... I was finally able to dock at a Station.

Of course, after finding the entrance to the blasted thing, which took nearly nine out of my ten minute window to do...

If you start to run short of docking time, just go back in and cancel docking, then re request it. Your 9 minutes start over. Just be sure to do this away from the station. :)

I asume that you find finding the entrance to the Cube like stations worse than the other kinds, if you approach the stations in SC from between the planetside and the station in orbit you will arrive to the stations entrance side whitch make it a lot easies also the stations(not outpost) always turn counter clockwise at the entrance side so keep that in mind if you get to a station and cannot see the entrance straight away...

Another FAILSAFE method for finding the front of the Cube like stations is to actually "target" the station. You do this by either centering in your viewport and hit T or hit the "G" button to cycle through the list of ships.

When you originally pick the station from your Nav screen, you are targeting the Navpoint for the station, not the station itself. This is indicated by a blue static model of the station that does not move. Once you drop out of supercruise, you are still targeting the stations navpoint (envision the navpoint is inside the station).

Target the station itself. The Icon for the station will change from a blue static model of the station to an orange rotating view which is the station itself. Look closely at the orange rotating icon. There are Arrows on the side that show the direction to the door.

That, and don't ask for clearance until you clearly see the door.
