Unable to play with friends?

Hey guys :)
I just brought my friend to start playing Elite, and now we want to play together. But it seems that we cant find each other. We tried to find us in 3 different systems, but each time its the same, we just cant see each other, but we see the same CMDR´s and NPC´s? We tried this at nav beacons and in front of some stations and outpost´s. Is this a bug, or is it a "feature" that you cant see your friends so that they cant boost you, for example? Any suggestions how to solve this problem? :) i really appreciate your help, thx. :)

I think the next major update will have wings in and better interface for playing with friends. I'll be trying to get some of my friends into the game once it's out.
