Unable to retrieve a complete mission list from the server. Again???

Too many times these errors. Again and again and again and again. I checked my internet and everything else goes more than fine. Is it only me?

Lol so what? Sunday is the day that game collapses?

It used to be a thing...not so much in recent times. Sunday is usually a day when server loads are highest...but FDev's servers have been rather lacking of late since the 3.0 patch.

I've had this non-stop ever since 3.0 dropped. And no, there's nothing wrong with my internet connection either.
It's been doing this for quite a number of us since 3.0. Many complaints have been made and still continues to do this. I've narrowed it down to middle of the night in the UK that it seems to be happening. Every night around 2-3am or so is when it starts doing this every single night...

Are you able to bypass your router and connect directly to your modem by wire? Depending on your setup that might be supremely inconvenient. However, the issue does seem to come from some sort of incompatibility with certain routers. That's what fixed this very same issue for me.

My experience is somewhat different. I have seen this error once. I do notice since 3.0 that it tends to take much longer, so I figure it's hitting some sort of time out. The interesting thing would be why my experience is better. I am on a wired connection into the router on a pc.

I had some troubles initially with this game and although my broadband connection was theoretically more than adequate, I found that in the small print the provider was actually throttling my upstream to around a tenth of what it normally was and it was already a fraction of what the down stream was.

This is a common issue for me. I know my bb connection is not the greatest, but it has no bearing on this issue.

I will suffer this after each major update.

Eventually, they tweak something and it improves.

They then seem to tweak it again and get it running really well about two weeks before the next big update is due.

I then get two weeks of mission heaven before the cycle begins again.

It is clearly something their end, as my set up does not change.

It is the one thing I wish they could sort out post haste, rather than drag out over a vast amount of time.

This seems to be related to server load. here in Europe this usually starts around 1am on Weekends ( probably the American Crowd that hits the Servers ). Its not just Mission Boards then. Instance dropping, USS Spawning etc all is slower but managable.

The Mission Board error also happens when your CPU is pegged ( Happens on my laptop dual core low Ghz count almost all the time - but there i dont care ).
Guess they could increase the timeout a bit or make it more of a background process with a few new missions when docking.

Also FD seems to tweak constantly in background on the PHP backend and slowly gets that stuff sorted out with more efficient code over time. As long as it doesen't keep you from playing i wouldnt worry too much about it for now. Just report it with times so they know about it and can issue ways to fix it - be it more server ressources or some other Method.

Back in the days when the Missionservers where overtaxed you landed in Mainmenu - at least thats over now.

Cheers!

Translation: It's not a bug, it's a feature.

I get this message every single time I open the message boards for the first time. And about a 60% chance of getting it, or getting a severely depleted message board without the error message, on subsequent attempts. It usually takes me three to five attempts before I get the full board. Yes, I have an abominable internet connection and a 10 year old PC.

It takes about a minute to attempt to load the board each time, whether it succeeds or fails, so I usually have to wait about five minutes between docking and getting to a properly populated message board. And people wonder why I'm not as effective at BGS work as I ought to be. Fortunately, I don't usually have to struggle that much to complete a mission, because the hand-in missions are always on the first iteration of the list, no matter what.

I'll keep saying it everytime a thread like this comes up.

There is too much waste on the mission boards (over 80% of generated missions are typically wasted effort by the server^). It's making mission boards unresponsive or incomplete, producing slow wait times, and blocking FD's ability to add new and diverse content that would otherwise "spam" the mission board (such as universally available long range missions and Thargoid missions). To overcome this, FD *must* implement the ability for players to select:

- The broad category of mission type they want offered;
- From a given faction of interest

The categories can be as broad (Combat, Trade, Mining, Specialist) or as specific as FD want. This already happens for passenger missions to a degree so it's not a new concept.

For reference, here's the load time of a standard mission board vs a "short" 25-mission board. It's a whole order of magnitude of difference.

Standard

25 missions only

^ Without even going near player preference, most mission boards generate nearly 100 missions, and players can select a maximum of 20, so it's guaranteed 80% waste every time.

So the ridiculously expurgated versions of the mission board are an FDev 'fix' for equally ridiculous loading times?

It's hardly intentional on FD's part, depending on what you're talking about.

The video I posted with just 25 missions is a specific system I hunted down which is an artefact of how missions get generated. That system is particularly isolated, so there's not much that can generate.

But what the OP is talking about? Yup, that's just there to give you *something* when the mission board is taking too long to give you 100 odd missions, most of which you won't be interested in. Before they made the board do that, you just got nothing.

/ED apologist mode on

Its all players fault - too many of them playing on Sunday and hammering the server with unreasonable load.
No big deal, I will just do something else. Its good for you not to stuck playing games on Sunday anyway.

;)
