Unable to target stars and planets in unknown systems.

Hello

I am having an issue, and I'm not sure if its a bug or I'm doing something wrong.
I am unable to target stars or planets in unknown systems, making it imposable to scan them. They don't even show in the navigation panel of my ship.

You need to have the (Basic) Discovery Scanner (*Even* if you don't use it directly). That's the only way to be able to select Stars/Planets when you're close enough

and you have to get really, really close sometimes.

the distance seems inconsistent...sometimes I have to be so close the planet is filling the entire screen, other times it picks it up from a fair distance...

edit: hang on, is there an extra specific action you can make with the discovery scanner, apart from just flying up really close until you detect a new object?

The discovery scanner is a "weapon", which is usable in both Normal flight and Supercruise. Bind it, then "fire": it will reveal all planets/stars/... in a 400 Ls* radius (Better scanners have a bigger radius). They still need to be "scanned", but they are much easier to find (and select!) this way, as they appear in your Targets panel

* And not 400 Ly, as initially stated

well i've been wasting hours scanning starfields for parralax movement. what an idiot.

Most of the time, 400 Ls radius is not sufficient anyway, so that's not completely wasted. Consider that a good training :) The scanner is especially useful for finding all moons of a planet (And for small systems, obviously)

And I really meant "400 Ls", not "400 Ly" ^^
