Under The North Star: PvE DCS/ETS2/MSFS/ArmA 3/Modern Naval Warfare Command Operations/Board Games Meta-Event

A few months back, AirGoons ran a meta-event entitled 'The Long Afternoon War' which focused on a hypothetical WW3 scenario in the South Atlantic.

Now, the team behind it are returning with intent to expand the scope to incorporate air/land/sea/logistics operations using a fully player ran BLUFOR taking on a Player managed (i.e. making tactical decisions/unit dispositions and deployment), but AI operated Russian REDFOR in the North of Europe.

The action has yet to start, but if Long Afternoon War was anything to go by, should be a good event to stick your nose into if you're playing any of the above games, as even logistics moves on MSFS/ETS2 could shape the battlescape.

That sounds really cool - back in the early 90’s a bunch of us once combined two board games (Hunt For Red October & Red Storm Rising) for an epic WW3 scenario (it was designed for this). If I remember correctly, it was a turn of Red October for naval warfare & trying to get convoy supplies across the Atlantic, followed by two turns of RSR for the tank/aviation battle across Europe - with any convoys making the crossing adding to reinforcement points for RSR.

It was really fun but demanded a huge amount of table space 😅

That does sound pretty awesome (it reminds me in concept a little of Where there is Discord, a single player Falklands Board game, but ramped up to 11).

The big draw for me about this Northern Star and The Long Afternoon War (hence starting a thread here) is that they're very much casual 'put as much time in as you wish' type things, rather than a WWII Online 'if you take your eye off the prize for a day for real life stuff, it could ruin the 90 day campaign'.

So I'll probably run one ETS2 haul a week, then maybe a little bit of DCS or ArmA if free otherwise.

To my boardgame shame, I’ve still not played WTiD even though I bought it when it first came out 😅 The huge box lurks in my cupboard, awaiting the day I can get the dining room table to myself for a few days!

If thats the case, you might want to have a look at what its going for online.

Last time I saw it, second hand WTiD boxes were going for £200+ on ebay
