Hopefully not, I can't think of a single remake that was better than the original.

A modern remake would suffer from all the recent bad habits of hollywood.

Splosions... PC culture... Dumb writing... over use of CG... underestimating the audience.

Probably best that it remains untouched.

Watch Bird box reminded me of a 50's/60's film, not too shabby at all.

The Thing, The Fly are 2 that I like more than the originals.

The thing from another world wasn't really that closely related to Who goes there (the original short story) that Carpenters the Thing was based on much more closely, so I'd say not really that valid. Both very very good films for their time and available special effects.

The Thing prequel however was a bit pants, which furthers my theory.

You are right about the fly though, not the sequels.

+1 for The Black Hole.

I'm also a fan of this one, it's basically High Noon in space.

On the topics of remakes though, one that I've always wanted to see remade is The Running Man. Not because the ahnuld flick isn't fantastic 80s action cheese (it is) but because the movie doesn't resemble the book it's based on in any way besides lifting the names of a couple of the characters. A movie (or miniseries) that stayed close to the book would be fantastic.
