Newcomer / Intro Understanding Trade Routes & Trade data

So they've made trading a lot harder than it should be. You only see the prices when you are docked at a station, which I get. But surely it should keep track of the prices for at least some time and not completely forget it as soon as you undock. This game is just becoming a pain and not really fun. The learning curve is high, but for something which is just overly cumbersome to play.

Anyway, buying trade data. People have told me not to bother, its inaccurate and only lasts 24 hours, but what exactly does it do? I bought it once to test it and no idea what it did.

And the trade routes. Well, they look real pretty, but again, they are just a pain to use. Some of the colours are so similar, and then you drill down and eventually you find out what good is being exported. Ok - right, so I've got it, there is a glowing orange line going from where I am to another system. And I drill down and its Commodity X. So, I buy it from a station in the system that I am in, where the price looks ok, and the supply is high.

I then travel to my destination system, look around for a station which will import it... And find.... none of them do. Eh? So I dock at one station, only to find I will make a loss. Take off, fly to another station, same story. Eventually I found one where I made a bit of a profit. Lots of time spent, very cumbersome. And then when I decide to do another trade run, I have no idea what to buy because all my prices from the stations I was at 20 minutes ago have gone.

Do I really need to write down the buy sell price of every commodity at every station I visit to even play the game?

I know there are 3rd party tools about taking screenshots and then exporting the data, but seriously.... They decided not to put this in the game, even though surely every on board flight computer would come with at least a basic computer for recording these things.

I really just started taking screenshots of the trade lists when I visit a station.

I haven't figured out yet myself how to use the trade data I bought.

Export / Import Info is useless. It wasn't in Frontier Elite 2 :/

Trade data just gives you the imports from/exports to option for that system in the commodities market that you can look at instead of the galactic average. It's not terribly useful.

Trade works great, the numbers can move based on running trade, so you might have a good trade run get ruined by an npc delivery.

At the start use the home system map to see the stations, to the left you see the basic needs of the market, the first runs are going to be food runs, you need to match import and export needs, no numbers but just needs. This will grant the best trades and the info is used for other start systems for long haul work. The system really bends over backwards to help. The learning curve is there but easy, just review the screens in port, take your time and see the data.

This is a different game, it uses jump space for travel and real space as the play space, its very different in that way and takes some getting used to

You can buy the trade data and see the trade goods these ar only the different groups like mineral metels food etc using the filter you can figure out wich items are specificly bought and sold .

myself i use pre printed spread sheet fill in the goods buy and sell and the ships and equipment sold and writedown the systems and station names on top so its easy to use .

it takes some time but it wil pay of on the long run.

remember this is not a game to play fast take your time .

Make an aditional list for trade routes .

have fun

You can buy the trade data or just go there and scan it yourself and make money that way. I usually go with a full belly of whatever trade I could get at the previous starport at a good price and hope for the best. Worse case scenario you usually cover the fuel bill with the data you gather. That being said, I'd more often than not explore the ports regardless... That's what Dora the Explorer would do :p

Opinions vary. In my book, the existing trade interface is nearly useless.

  • Can't see the galaxy map and prices simultaneously.
  • Can't see quantities/prices/demand level at destinations.
  • Average price and export/import indicator don't help make informed decisions.

And it's just plain impractical from an ergonomic standpoint:

  • Destinations in the drop down list are randomly ordered, or ordered in some very non-obvious way.
  • Can't sort/filter on any column.
  • No automation for max auto buy/sell.
  • Doesn't gray out things you can't afford.

Look to Space Trader for Windows as an example of a FAR more practical trading interface (I have a screenshot, but being new to the forum, I can't include a link to it yet). You can see both the map AND the dollar prices AS WELL AS the price delta and percent gain/loss, all at once. This makes it a piece of cake to pick profitable shipments.

I think we must be playing a different game.

Hours and hours of play not really understanding it and reading pages and pages in forums is not really what I would class as the system bending over backwards.

Thanks for the other replies, but I'm still not sure what buying trade data does, since I can already see imports and exports already.

Oh, and the commodity market. Why oh why isn't there some kind of indicator, like an icon or even a different colour when a good is available for less than galactic average, or just another column indicating 'profit'. Right now, I have to manually go down the list one by one, look at both columns, compare the prices, do a quick calculation in my head. Don't get me wrong, I can add up - but this is just nonsense.

I agree Tethior. I wish they would implement your ideas. It is just a gamble looking at the trade routes. I end up with a loss 75% of the time. I am not sure where to go from here.

I've never been a big trader person, but I tried to do it today. Boy that was horrible! I'm only doing the "trade" missions now to up my level in various factions

I agree that for the most part trade works, however there are some serious glitches.

Examples:

Buying from somewhere which is showing a "high" supply and then selling at somewhere that is at the time of selling showing a "high" demand resulted in a 225 LOSS

Trade screen shows an item is exported from my current system to the next two that I am planning on visiting so that would seem like a good buy. Sadly the profit in first system was 2 credits per tonne (item cost over 4000) and was prohibited in the second system which didn't have a black-market.

Its these kind of things that make trading a real pain in the butt.
