Undiscovered real stars in the Elite galaxy

When I started exploring one thing I took for granted was that all of the real catalogued stars that had been included in the game would have already been claimed, purely because there are 'only' about 160,000 of them, it was about 16 months after the game had been released and no doubt some commanders would have been actively searching for them from day one using the catalogue references.

Imagine my surprise then when I jumped to HD 133444 yesterday, over two years after the game went live. I can only assume it's due to it being in an area that isn't heavily travelled and also featuring distances that would have been challenging at best prior to the introduction of jumponium and engineered drives.

I was quite absurdly pleased about it, to the point that I flew back to the bubble immediately to notify Universal Cartographics of my find :) I'm heading back out that way now to scan the system fully.

I got my name on a secondary star in one of the HIP systems. The guy before me only scanned the primary and left everything else. I've yet to get a primary star though, Congratulations CMDR. o7

I got my name on one HD System not that long ago. it was around the end date of the Distant Worlds expedition and that System was just over 1k ly out from the Bubble. Im pretty sure theres still loads of real stars without Nametags out there. Actually, right next to the system i tagged back then, is another HD system. i havent been there yet but i posted the name here on the Forums. Might still be without a name tag.

/edit

No wait, i sold the Data in October, so its only 2 months ago.

What a beautiful system, I would be very interested in the composition and temperatures of the landable worlds.

I'll link screenies after I've scanned it up, might be a little while though because I came across it whilst I was on the way to Hawkins gap (it's about halfway between the bubble and the gap, below the galactic plane) and I'm headed back over to the gap at the moment, so I may end up scanning it fully on the way back.

what can you want to have more?

I always wanted to have my name on a real star but i figured it was way too late to look for them since i started exploring about one year after the game released. But then i stumbled upon HD 123919. We jsut departed for the Distant Worlds Expedition and set up camp at the first Waypoint near the Fine Ring Nebula.
Later, i tried to get as high as possible from there so i jsut went straight up until i hit a dead end...and there it was. A Real Star, undiscovered, untagged. I was thinking about jetting back to quickly cash in the Data but then i just continued the Expedition with checking every day if theres a name on it yet or not :p
Had the Data for 10 months until i finally sold it and got the Name tag on it.

Later i discovered that theres actually another HD system right next to it, i totally missed that one when i was there. Posted the Name on the Forum for someone else to grab it but it might still be untagged.
I think ill check on that one now. its just around 1 or 2k ly out so its a fairly short journey.

I've got my name on 3 HD systems and 2 HIP systems simply because I was an early explorer who got out there soon after the game launched.

If you can find an undiscovered HD or HIP system today, then kudos to you! :)

i just checked that one system i mentioned earlier and it was still untagged... and i found another HD System on the way. That makes 3 HD Systems with my Name on them. HD 126216, HD 123212 and HD 123919.

HD 126216 is just under 1k ly from SOL too. I think should start to buy lottery tickets :D

I've tagged HIP 107815 and HIP 105093 that I noticed. That would've been in August 3301 which is quite a while ago, but also a fair while after the game launched given neither is very far from the bubble.

Not all stars are listed in the same places apparently, when i asked about a particular star way back before the game went live I was informed it was listed in an old US navy catalogues that ED was not pulling data from and thus hadn't been included in the game until i asked about it.

I assume that some players may not be aware of what stars are in ED simply because they are using other listings? I dunno, I'm no astronomer. :D

I tagged HD 196380 less than 2 weeks ago whilst returning from Colonia.

As recently as 17th November, I tagged 7 in a day: HD 3524, HD 5250, HD 5631, HD 6023, HD 6485, HD 18935, HD 60729

As usual, look above or below the plane :D

ps: HD 168220 is currently untagged - I was there in November but didn't scan anything and no one has tagged it since. 3, 2, 1... Go!

Aah yeah that's the ticket, Star I was looking for was USNO-A2 0900-06295262, managed to get up there with a commander eventually but had to wait until jumponium was added in to the game. It would be a bit easier now with engineered drives but at the time I went up there it took hours to find a way through even with a specialised long range Anaconda.

IME you've got a fairly good chance of finding them over the Kylie mark. Even under the Kylie mark in high latitudes. You have a much better chance if the star doesn't stand out from the crowd - even in the big clusters you can sometimes find untagged catalogue stars if they're only Ks and Ms. People home in, reasonably enough, on the bright blue stuff and the giants, and don't pay as much attention to the small dull ones.
