Undiscovered

If something is actually discovered, because someone has been there before me, why is it I dont find out about that until after I've visited and scanned? If Commanders have come back and sold their cartographic data, how come it isn't being distributed?

Am I missing something, can I buy an updated galactic map?

Universal Cartographics aren't in the habit of giving away data to all and sundry. You can buy data for neighbouring system, but it would get pretty costly to buy data on a galactic scale.

How do I buy data on a neighbouring system? I cant say I've ever seen this. What if the system has no neighbour (i.e. most of space)

Carthography service doesn't give away info for free. And currently there is no way to buy the data for far away systems. or in bulk.

in addition to the ingame explanation. There is as well a technical reason. The galaxy map is totally client side and does not interact with the FD servers. Which is why the galaxy map is so damn fast :)

So the galaxy map doesn't know if somebody has been there or not. Only the system map will query the FD servers and learn that information.
