Undocumented colonization side effect?

My faction has suddenly gained control of seven newly colonized systems, some of them already quite well endowed with stations. We initiated just one colony.
We're assuming that the commanders who started these new colonies were unaffiliated with a faction (or were hidden supporters), and began their push from one of our systems so that we gained control by default. We're anticipating possible takeover attempts in the near future.
Any other theories?

Most likely, yes. The station controller of the station that colonisation is initiated from defaults to being the controller of the new system.

If the architect is in a squadron aligned to a different faction, that faction gets brought in in third place.

That is exactly what happened yes, and Ian explained where the third faction comes from. I am going to lock this thread as it was communicated and it's best to continue discussions in the main Beta feedback thread if you have any issues/thanks for it.
