Unexpected Scarcity of Black Holes

I seemed to hit these things on regular frequency on my trek to Sgr A back in 3301 (2015), to the point where I was taking some significant damage hitting their excision zones with orbital lines turned off, and needed to learn to throttle back when jumping into these sorts of systems.

Now, however, on my roundabout way back from DW2, I'm not spotting many, if any of these systems compared to neutron star systems on the galaxy map, though I am further out, halfway to the rim now, on my roundabout way back from DW2.

It seems strange to me that I'm not seeing these black hole system on the galaxy map when using the apt filter.

Maybe there is some sort of range filter or something so that I'm not able to see them within so many light-years?

Hmm...

The non-sequential stars, which include neutron stars and black holes, and maybe one or two others, unselecting everything else.

I do see the occasional black hole system, but not really any out near where I'm at, even trolling around on the galaxy map for a while.

I'm currently in Vulcan Gate area heading toward Elysian Shore.

Seems strange to me, but maybe they are just that rare out here?

For every black hole there are approximately 10 neutron stars. It's not unusual to encounter far more neutron stars than black holes.

Here's a map of known black holes: https://edastro.com/mapcharts/black-holes.png

I wonder if it's region specific in some way based on galactic dispersion, as I've gone through scores of neutron star hits in these areas without hitting a black hole.

It just struck me as odd, since I happened across so many closer to the core, but of course there is a lot more of everything going that way.

Thanks for the followup and links. :)

Are you at +/- 1000 lightyears from the galactic plane? Both the neutron stars and the black holes are far more common in those layers. Plus you have to make sure you're not in the suppression cross. One of the bars of the cross passes right through the middle of Elysian Shore, and the southern tip of Vulcan Gate. And, they're much more common closer to the core than out in the arms, but they're still there.

EDIT: As you can see in the map linked a couple posts back, they're quite sparse outside of the core area.

Thanks, mates. Just struck me as an oddity based on what I'm used to.

Heading off toward some neutron star drop and having a few hundred jumps till then, will keep an eye out now and then.

Cheers. :)

Try combining a realistic map view with your current filter. In a realistic view, black holes are clearly visible on the map. If I understand you correctly ...

When I headed that way I got a real "eye" for finding black holes but it took a while. As per Klepto I combined the realistic map with the standard map to hunt for them.

I often found pockets/nest/swarms of black holes numbering many 10s in a relatively small volume.

I also used a method of advance searching by flying through the galaxy map ahead of my route doing a rough 3D grid search. If you tune the range just right you get the stars showing up in the largest possible view (in terms of distance across).

Good luck!

They are thin as heck out here. Thanks for the pointers all the same though. You guys make good suggestions, but neutron star systems seem to be what's on the menu.

Cheers. :)
