Unexplainable fear of large celestial bodies.

So, i dont know if anyone knows what im talking about, but i have an always returning nightmare that gets me every few months, in which i dream that our planet is colliding with another planet and it scares me like crazy seeing that huge monstrous planet heading towards earth, and then usually when its impact time i wake up.

Now, you will probably wonder what that has to do with Elite Dangerous? Thats easy. I cant Fuel Scoop. It scares the holy jesus outta me to get close to stars. I even made a voiceattack macro that turns me around and away from the star as soon as i arrive in a system.

Once i arrived in a binary star system and the gravity of one of the stars kinda catapulted me into the other one, and i totally panicked. Sweat attack included.

I dread the day when i will arrive at my first black hole....cause those i am even more afraid of.

Ridiculous, i know.

I wonder, if a collision with something large as a planet (even as small as Mercury for example), if we would even feel anything once the explosion starts. I'd guess everyone would be instantly vaporized right? Nothing to fear just enjoy the spectacular show in the sky if you're lucky enough to be on the right side of Earth

If they're anything as spectacular as neutron stars, you have nothing to fear. Neutron star have a diameter on the order of ten kilometres, so you don't get to actually see them; black holes have a lensing effect around them, but the videos I've seen so far don't make them anything as awe-instilling as normal stars.

To the OP: Wait till you get sent on a collision course with a cold star. A star that burns cold.

Better call the doctor then :), or Amy actually :)

My friend, what you have is an ever recurring cause of.....SPPPPAAACCEEE MADDDDNNNESSSSS.
My diagnostic team has concluded that you must do you first expedition towards a nearby Nebula to reduce any and all causes of SPPPAAAACEEEEEE MAADDDDNNEESSSS.
Should you ever find yourself with fear of both SPPPPAAACCEEEE MAADDNNNESSSSS and isolation, please remember to equip yourself with a advanced discovery scanner to have celestial entities as catering and supportive friends.

Maybe this vid will help with scooping.

As for jumping into a system, the biggest 'thrill' is jumping into a black hole system, not knowing how big it will be or what else will be there! - I've jumped into what I call a 'Dead System' where there are no stars just a black hole and a dead planet! Just awesome and scary at the same time!

Yeah, if you're in a craft that collides with solid rock at orbital velocities, you're turned into shockwave of expanding gas probably faster than your nerves could send the information of all the things vaporizing to your brain.:D

i dont think i really have astrophobia, on the contrary. im a total astrophysics nut. i watch every show about the universe and i got a poster of neil degrasse tyson in my study.

its just that im totally scared of ... getting too close to big planets or stars...or them getting too close to me.

As stated before, you are contracting SPPPPPPPPPPAAACCCCCEE MAAADDDNNESSSS due to your lack of expeditions. I think you'll find that in fact, you are also afraid and somewhat, respecting the large scale this game has to offer. It is daunting, crazy and damn well demeaning, but you brave starblazer, will dive deep into the abyss and stare at it, while it stares at you.

I once dreamt I floating in the orbit of Jupiter. It was an immense feeling and slightly terrifying because of the enormity of the thing. Luckily, there was a space bar nearby, so the dream narrative changed to something far more pleasant.

Everytime I come out of hyperspace, I find myself catching my breath and that's even though I have the forewarning of the audio build up and I can't release the x key till I know I've stopped.

Edit:
Neil DeGrasse Tyson ain't no poster boy, he demoted Pluto!

I guess you won't be playing on the Oculus Rift then... :(

A fear isn't ridiculous though.

Oh wow. With me, it's always the moon or an asteroid. In my dream, I see it at a huge distance, then it starts to "pulse" as though zooming towards Earth and then away again. Finally, it plummets down and I wake yelling in a cold sweat with my girlfriend laughing at me for making weird cat noises for a few seconds before I wake up.

I'm telling her tonight that it isn't just me!! Avoid caffeine after 6pm and go for a walk and bad dreams stop. Promise! I've been hospitalised with anxiety twice, so my "ten minute walks" (which sometimes stretch to 10 miles) are a staple of my lifestyle and calmness. Twitch. Twitch.

I suspect you have been watching too much of the National Doomagraphic channel. Every single program they do is obsessed with how something in space is going to kill us. I doubt you're the only one with a phobia of celestial bodies.

It would depend on how fast and direct the collision would be, if it was direct towards each other and high speed, then it would be quick.
If it was slower and the planets began orbiting each other in circles first, you'd probably have lot's of affects in the weeks before collision, massive tidal forces causing floods, earthquakes and volcanoes on a biblical scale.
But it probably won't happen.

To the OP, maybe it will help if you just get in a sidewinder and go crash into a star and few planets, this might relieve the fear a bit.

Some extra imagery for your dream OP. Poor film compared to the original but nice effects at the start.
