Unexplored Planet/Station Despite Multiple Dockings

Been playing for about a month and am still figuring things out. One issue that has me stumped is unexplored behavior. For instance, right now I am docked at Maia Point in Maia, and it is still listed as "unexplored" on the default navigation panel, as is the moon that it resides on. This is not my first trip here, and I have run and delivered missions to and from this station previously. Surely docking at a station is enough to get it permanently "explored" right?

I've been looping missions to Maia stations for the better part of the day, and none of them have appeared as explored except for Obsidan Orbital which has a big community deal going on at the moment.

Going to have to ask the obvious here. have you actually...

- Scanned the planet? That is, selected the planet from the navpanel, pointed your ship at it, and waited for the scan to finish?
- Sold the data for the planet to a Universal Cartographics office further than 20 LY away from that planet?
- Lost your ship sometime between scanning the planet and selling the data?

For an Unexplored system, the data from any planets you scan doesn't become permanent until you sell it. If your ship gets blown up before you sell it, you lose any data you might have had and you have to re-scan the planets again.

There are two alternative ways of obtaining the scan data, which I also think are permanent once you do them:
- Purchase it while docked at a starport in a neighbouring system (this method costs you credits)
- Scan the Nav Beacon in the system (this method is credits-neutral; it costs nothing but you can;t sell the data either).

Finally, there have been bugs reported where players have "locked-in" the scan data (by selling it, buying it or scanning a nav beacon) but the data disappears anyway.

Yep, I haven't sold it. I came to the area and stayed, running missions. The station I chose as my home base is identified as "the second unexplored object from the primary"...I have now docked there more than a dozen times and it is still unknown to me.

I'll make it a point to sell it somewhere >20 ly away and see what happens. Thanks much for the informative reply.

Populated stations will show up in the system map and are selectable, even if you haven't scanned the planet.
I've done this before, selected the station, approached and landed without ever selecting the planet so it could be scanned.

If the planet shows as unexplored right now, it means you have not scanned the planet. Or at least not since the last time your ship blew up.
Selling the data won't help if it is still unexplored at this time. You can only sell the data after you have scanned it.

Just docking at a station is not enough to give you the details about the planet.
Be sure to select the planet, not the station on the surface, and with your nose pointed directly at the planet, wait for the scan to finish.

You can fly up to a station thats next to a planet that the game knows you havnt seen and when you fly close enough the planet suddenly pops into existance
