"Unexplored"

Quick question, if a planet has no "discovered by CMDR whoever" next to it, just the words "unexplored" next to it, does that mean I am the first person to find it?

You will be if you sell your data to a station before anyone else (who might have also scanned that same planet).

edit to add: and you scanned it. Just using the discovery scanner is not enough to be the "Discoverer" if that makes sense

I means no one has scanned it "AND" reported it yet. If you are the first to scan and report it then your name will be there in the future. A lot of Objects have been scanned by pilots who have not returned yet so first return, first credit! :)

To be pedantic, you're not necessarily the first to have scanned it.

Someone else might have done before you buy they've yet to sell the data.

But, in all likelihood, if you're far enough out, you probably are the first. And probably will get the first discovered tag if you get back to sell that data.

It's not that far out, it's an entire system of 31 bodies, only 300 odd LR from Bhutas where I set off.

Is it worthwhile quickly scanning everything then high tailing back to the first station just to tag it all?

Yup, unless it's one of the systems that are known to all, like Sol or Achenar.

They wouldn't show as "unknown" or "unexplored".

Yes. Check the nearby systems first, see if you can't get more. Then head back. 300ly is nothing. And having a first so close is pretty neat.

Once you get your first 20 or so first discovered tags the urge to race back sell lessons quite a bit, until you find that one really super fabulous amazing system..;)

I saw some obviously well-travelled systems that didn't have the "discovered by" label and I don't think scanning them with surface scanner changed that. I think there are some systems that don't have label but also can't be your discoveries.

It depens of the type of body, if they are boring icy planets I will keep going, but if one of the planets is a earth-like, or a waterworld... or a nice gas giant, I probably will head back fast.

If they are ice worlds or asteroids I wouldn't bother, you don't get any bonus for scanning either of them other than you name on them. I rushed back after scanning my first system but later realized the likely chance someone else has scanned it is pretty remote, with 400 billions systems. I would recommend you scan around 10 or so systems before heading back.

I found a system unexplored except for the star by a beta backer without a proper name. I was surprised because its pretty local. Scanned it all, and sold it, yet it still has no discovered by name. I'm guessing bug.

I don't think so.

It's either known (such as Sol) or unknown.

If it's unknown and someone has scanned it and sold the data, their name will be on it. If it's unknown and no one has sold the data, it's up for grabs.

You can see several systems inside civilised space with commander names on. There's no such thing as an unknown system which you cannot get first discovery by scanning it first and selling the data.

If you can scan it to get data, you can get first tag. Obviously, if you're first.

I've not noticed this. It's always worked as expected for me.

Maybe it's a bug. Did you actually scan the bodies that had no name attached? Or did you just disco horn and move on?

Did it properly because I was excited cos I thought I found something and raced to sell the info. Check it out on the galaxy map. I also found a single high metal planet near by unexplored with no name and that had the same situation but I forgot its name
