unfair bounties

So I was bountyhunting in my Eagle, shooting a wanted sidewinder when suddenly some other bountyhunter flies in front of me. I was still shooting, so I hit him, meaning I got a bounty. he stole the kill from me and then everyone at the navigation beacon started shooting me for my bounty. I died and had to pay 4000 credits for my old loadout.

now this if of course unfair. it was because someone else was flying badly that I had to die. this should be fixed by making people only get a bounty in case they continue firing at someone. I hope this will be fixed in the next patch.

also, tell me if you have experienced this before as well!

So,

you're shot someone that wasn't wanted, then stayed around till you got destroyed, and you think it's unfair?

It's your responsibility to make sure of where you're shooting. Shooting innocent people is a crime, even if you didn't intend to hit them.

well, thing is, he suddenly flew in front of me. I was caught by surprise and couldnt respond in time. I was still shooting at the moment and thus I accidentally hit him. I didnt have the time to pay off my bounty before I was killed, my frameshift was disrupted by factor 18 and like 6 or 7 people were shooting at me.

and this has happened more often as well. one time, someone bumped into me from the side while I was shooting(it was a pretty hard crash, my shields barely survived) and I accidentally shot him. there was nothing I could do about it and I got wanted because someone else is a bad flyer. really annoying, but I havent been shot down since the first time luckily. but this has happened to me about five times now and it is quite anoying I have to say.

Two things that you need to be a combat pilot are a) Situational awareness and b) good fire control. The first one means keeping an eye on your scanner it shows you were other ships are and second is harder to master in involves not keeping you finger mashed onto the fire button. Shot in controlled bursts even with beam weapons, switch off crime reporting (far right tab on right hand MFD) this will stop authority ship coming to 'help' you and reduce the chance of hitting them.

Obviously people are "flaying badly" on purpose, so they can legitimately blow you up after you hit them. Did this too, since you barely find humans whith a "legitimate" bounty. Just watch your surroundings.

Imagine you had a Plasma Accelerator equipped and accidentally shot s.o.... even if if it was by accident... it should be punished.
A single pulse laser hit? Well, maybe they should implement a dmg threshhold after which a bounty is issued.
I am against it though. If s.o. is attacking you, you should be able to immediately fire back without risking a bounty on your head.

This topic has been discussed to hell. Frontier are looking into a resolution to this that can't be abused to hell by players who just wanna get in free hits on people.

Fire discipline is a thing. Learn it.

Combat would be a lot less fun if you could just indiscriminately mash the fire button. Keep situational awareness. Hold fire when allies and non-combatants are coming into view. Use "fire at will" mode on turreted/gimballed weapons at your own risk (personally I don't want a weapon to fire unless I press fire).

At the same time I would be in favour of the first offence being just a fine and small reputation loss without the wanted status. But second and subsequent offences? You should have known better by then.

You have a radar that shows in real time the position of all craft around you. It's called situational awareness. Seems to me it was well played by him he cashed in on two bounties (assuming he got yours). Your problem OP just remember the CMDR's name and wait for your chance to pounce.

It's swings and roundabouts. This is the double edged sword of "report crimes against me". You can do the same to other ships if you have a clean status. Fly between them and the vessel you are attacking. If they shoot you they'll get a wanted status. I think all were going to see on this forum is endless streams of player crying foul because they've shot an authority vessel or a clean craft by mistake. But those are the rules of space fight in the Elite Dangerous universe. It's one of the things that make it dangerous. If you don't like the heat, stay out of the kitchen. There are plenty of other things to do in the game besides combat.

Another thing to look out for regarding situation awareness and keeping an eye on the radar are down range ships...the enemy ship between you and another friendly.

Fire discipline only matters if you're using weapons you can control. I got into a situation similar to this, except it was that someone had gotten between my target any my turrets. Not a whole lot I could do about that.

in time you will learn to have more situational awareness and anticipate when some moron is going to fly in front of you or behind your target. It's not unfair it just takes a bit of experience to know when its going to happen. Also if it does happen start boosting out immediately, dont wait to finish your kill just start getting out.

Necromouse is watching you!

Probably better served starting a new thread, rather than digging up one nearly a year old, especially given the changes the bounty and friendly fire mechanics have been through since then.

The game is rather unforgiving in the respect of shooting other clean players. Even kill-stealers. :)

I found myself in a glorious ching-ching payout RES. Made 6 million in my Vulture, then I shot a Python I was sure was wanted, but wasn't. Boost, run, boost, supercruise.

There should be a fine for friendly fire, but not a ten-minute bounty where you have to high wake into a different system to clear it. Now if you kill a clean ship then yes, 5,000 bounty and hostile response.

The op posted a year ago. There's basically no such thing as kill stealing anymore. And he probably would not have incurred a fine either.
