Unintelligible player comms

One thing I've noticed recently (having moved to a slightly more populated-with-real-players part of the galaxy) is that sometimes their comms is just a line of blocks and spaces.

So I might send out a greeting and get back:

[To Local]: o7 guys
[From CMDR SoAndSo]: ... ..... ...: )

(only instead of full-stops it's small blocks)
I'm guessing that they're using non-latin alphabets (Japanese or something similar). Is that the case?

it's to do with their keyboard characters not being UK/US English (Or other english speaking countries)

So they are not from an english speaking country, and what ever you type to them presumably will be oblongs to them as well/

Pretty much what I thought. Thanks. Just seem to be seeing a lot of them lately.

I have to say, I am somewhat surprised that in today's modern games, there is still a language barrier. I mean even Google can roughly translate English to Just about anything or Just About Anything to English with something akin to accuracy.. so why should gaming be all that different? Parse and pass, and send an approximate translation to the viewer's default language.

Sure, we'll all see some pretty curious things from time to time, but I'd much rather figure out what someone's trying to say when I see:

"Bad guys, let's blow up" instead of "ዎቹ መጥፎ መጥፎዎቹን እስከ ንፉ እንሂድ".

I will challenge you on that bit with google, translate the next to English from Danish :)

"Ok, vi nupper ham narrehatten derovre, han er Elite han er eftersøgt i hele bulen!"
" jeg gir' ham med rumsterstangen fra siden, og så dig bagfra, så får han se hvor Moses købte øllet!"
" ohøj, der der er dømt tudefjæs, Jegskagidigskaya gjorde det igen!!"
"hold da kæft, skide 55 tusinde det er squ da småpenge din fedtspiller"

There is no hard swearing, a little Danish slang though!

Cheers Cmdr's

Hmmm - it seems the in-game typeface doesn't support Unicode.

It's an unhappy oversight.

I get rubbished for caring about fonts and typefaces, but I wish I could sort out the Greeks from the Russians.
I'd be very happy to see an in-game font capable of coping with everyone's languages.
Or at least MORE languages.

In fact - here's a call I haven't made for ages:
More variety of languages in the Stations.
I'd like to be told which pad is reserved for me in Japanese, Greek, Russian, Portuguese, Hindi, Tagalog, Welsh, and Finnish.

Add to your keyboard language settings all the language packs, then you should see what they type, not mean you will be able to read it thou
