Unintentional RP

Have you ever let the immersion guide you into doing something that's a bad idea as a gamer? Like picking up slave pods that get dumped out of a ship so they won't die, even though you never smuggle otherwise? I've gone way out of my way with those to find a place to offload them. Sometimes I just "jettison" them when I'm docked at a station.

My best story is this though:

I dropped into an USS. There was a pirate NPC talking to his wingman on the comm, just cruising along. He kept saying things like, "I'm trying to turn over a new leaf. I just wanted to do the right thing for a change!"

He was in an eagle and had a 60k bounty, an easy mark. I ignored his rambling. I strafed around below him and started taking my time with his cargo hatch (gotta check for those slaves). But... he KEPT going on about how bad his luck was and how he wanted to change. He was sending me messages like "Please stop!"

Finally I caved. I couldn't take it. 60k bounty or no, this guy was begging me to stop. I retracted my hardpoints and broke off, hitting my boost. He started chasing me though. My shields started making that dinging sound they do when they're just about to shatter. I spun back around. One pull of the trigger and he was gone.

His callsign was Mistral.

His wingman was in a sidewinder. He didn't say anything, but was clearly upset by his buddy's demise. The ship spiraled toward me with an agility I'd never seen in an NPC. I took a couple shots back at him to chase him off. I let him charge his FSD and escape with his measly 200 CR bounty. I'm waiting for him to track me down to get revenge.

Did almost the same thing - Interdicted a wanted hauler or adder or something like that with a nice bounty (in a Viper) and started to attack and the NPC said something like how bad his luck was, that he already had trouble with the Feds for some stupid mistake, something like that. Really heart breaking. I just laughed and let him go. This was to good, to cool, to much fun. It was one of those moments where I thought how cool this game is. NPCs that beg for their lives in a believable way.

And I kill every NPC in a Clipper. Got to destroy all Clippers I can destroy. Clippers are ugly, slave trader scum ships - need to destroy them, even if I'm in a fight with other targets, even if it has almost no bounty, even if they belong to a faction I support and I would never attack a ship of that faction. The influence of that faction might get a little bit lower, but MUST DESTROY THAT CLIPPER!!1! I know…

Did I mention that thing with the Clipper? Oh…

Elite: Shadows of Mordor? Actually, that might work!

That would be sooooo cool.

Did an assassination mission once, in a USS a NPC told me I should stop searching for my target (yea, sure) and that they would get get me if I didn't stop. I almost abandoned that mission, thinking that I would get interdicted by a wing or two of supporters of that terrorist. No, destroyed that Elite Anaconda (turreted large beams are unfair btw) and nothing happened.

I've done the slave thing myself.

This was quite a while ago when I was doing some trading in a Cobra.

Back during 1.1 when we used to get interdicted every 2 minutes I got dragged out of SC yet again! Normally if I'm in the middle of a mission or a trade run I just boost away and continue on, but I had been interdicted once too often this trip and this NPC was going to pay.

I started hammering away at his ship until it was starting to practically fall apart when he dropped cargo and started to run, just out of curiosity I targeted the canisters and saw that they were slaves. I didn't even know that the NPC's carried slaves, just then I heard Betty's warning about detecting a Frame Shift Drive but decided to let the NPC go and collect the canisters and save the slaves before they died since I had some empty cargo space.

As I was coming in to dock at a large station I didn't want to get caught with an illegal cargo, so I went slightly off to the side of the traffic lane and jettisoned the canisters reasoning that if this were RL then the station authorities would pick them up and release them.

Role playing like that made an otherwise mundane trip much more interesting :D

Wouldn't it be cool though that if your actions with certain NPC's (like this one) actually ended up having an effect on the BG sim?

You show this guy mercy. He cleans up his act, starts a business and makes a load of money. Then later on you get a cakewalk mission for a load of easy money and when you hand it in you're sent a message explaining that the mission was specifically for you and it was 3 times the bounty you gave up by showing him mercy. It could even be more involved and the guy could become leader of a faction that controls a station who then offers you a 20% discount on all shipyard and outfitting.

By just paying attention to your comms and not being an NPC farmer, you may end up richer.

This sounds like me in plenty of games. From HL2 to STALKER, there's always some poor pixellated person who needs looking after. I used to try and keep the City17 rebels alive during the squad-based part of the city. Holy cow is that an effort. If you play like you actually care about NPCs it can change your gameplay quite a bit.

I used to play STALKER. Happen across some guys sitting around a fire playing guitar and chatting. I thought to myself this is nice, good friends having a good time in the middle of nowhere surrounded by mutants. I'll join them and share my food with them:)
After some vodka and a little rad-ex, there was a blowout. We all ran for cover in an old rusted out pipe. I was first inside and they were still running, so I shot them all:)

Hey, it was a small pipe..

I love unintentional RP.

When I restarted, I intended to play as a smuggler in my chosen home system and surroundings. Before I know it, im locked in a faction war for control over the system. I want to travel a bit and find some nice illegal cargo to trade, or ferry some onionhead to far off worlds for a while. If I do though, my home will be taken over by religious fanatics.

I generally avoid the kill traders missions but I was working hard to gain a faction rep and I ended up taking one. I killed some poor, innocent traders for cash and reputation. Felt guilty enough. Then I swear the next three USSs I investigated were funeral ships! I felt terrible. Not doing that again.
