Unique/Exotic modules/weapons/ships

Even though I consider myself a hardcore ED player I am sometimes having an affair...

The last one was with Destiny 2 and one cool thing I liked in D2 is the presence of unique weapon/weapon perk combinations and exotic weapons and armour.
Something basically every player can get but without any guarantee for dropping.

Sometimes based on effort such as long quests, sometimes based on pure luck = RNGesus dropping from different activities.

Our ED universe is pretty much equalized and I would love the idea of receiving/finding one or the other way
  • unique modules for outfitting
  • unique weapons and armour
  • maybe even unique ships
Such items might be locked behind a longer quest sequence or just be found by pure chance - maybe out in the blacks finding an abandoned unique alien vessel? - or dropping from some special activities.

Allowing us to make our outfittings and loadout more special.

And I am - by purpose - not talking about unique skins aka paint jobs.

Weapons, modules, ships!

Thanks for considering.

That would be nice, and when I first started playing I thought it would be a good idea to have such things. Maybe a chance to find an abandoned alien ship in the dark that you could cannibalise for items with unique, but then I read the forums and the entitlement problem we have, where many players are complaining about not being able to buy the Cobra MK IV, it's just not fair, even though it was a limited release, and I now realise that anything anyone gets that isn't easily available to everyone would bring up such a flood of complaints that FDEV would feel obliged to release it for everyone.

So yes it's a nice idea, and no it's never going to happen!

I unfortunately agree that most likely never it's gonna happen.

However - referring to the example of D2 - all players have some exotic gear, not all the same quantity and also not all the same items.
The idea would be to provide for every player a fair chance to aquire something, of course it should still be a rare one, but just not the same for everybody.

So you might find out there this cool abandoned alien vessel which by default jumps 100 ly. Some other players might find one as well but not all players.
And I might find that cool @§ien$ hardpoint booster making out of my huge beam/cannon/whatsoever a super-huge (size 5...) one-shot station killer. Again some others having the same luck and others not.

RNG.

Sounds ALOT like the old engineering system... where a few lucky few got some really nice weapons/modules due to all the RNG aligned.. and then we have all the rest with mediocre/crappy rolls, and out of materials.

Some spent days/weeks/months to gather material to do ridiculous amounts of rolls to get those exceptionally god-rolls. There was a reason why the old system got reworked...

So how do you think people that crave to have the longest FSD jump would feel if they could not find this fabled 100 LY FSD? or only get it in the wrong size, etc, etc. We would be back at all the complains about to much RNG.

The current system is very much mechanistic. No real surprise, same outcome for everybody.
This is the base layer I wouldn't change.

I would like to add some layer of surprise and uniqueness. And no, I don't say only the >1k hours players should have a chance to get these exotics (or whatever you would name them).
Everybody would sooner or later get/find/quest one/some. Just not the same for everyone.

And with regards to complaining players... you never will get rid of that. Regardless of how hard FDev or any developer try to please everybody, never ever will that be the case.
Some will cry hooray, and their buddies say nooooooooooo.
Change it, and it's the same just with inverted sides.

Hence - don't care.

Exactly that. We just got rid of piles of stacked RNG, now we want new ways of gambling? I mean, I get the idea of the OP: the Millennium Falcon was a special ship. It would be awesome to have the Millennium Falcon. But to be that awesome, it needs to be unique.

But there we have the problem: if a game allows you to have the Millennium Falcon, then everybody wants to have it. Being told "no, our random number generator gave it to the guys left and right of you, but you don't get it" won't sit well with the people. For good reason. It feels unfair mostly due to the reason that it would be unfair.

We don't need to re-create this can of worms yet again.

I'm not a fan of this idea at all. In fact, all that randomness you mentioned is one of the main reasons I hate Destiny 1 and 2. In ED there is, I contend, the kind of randomness that makes sense. I think it's stupid to have random modules, etc. "drop out of the sky", essentially, just because you happened across some special instance. You already have random missions sent to you where, if you decide to follow them, take you to places where crashed ships are and you can scan for data or gather other materials. You have the randomness of Thargoid interaction that can potentially get you additional materials. And you already have to do some pretty involved missions to get certain ships or modules. But they are at least things you can A) decide ahead of time you actually WANT and B) know you can actually achieve them. If you land on moons/planets and drive around in the SRV you also randomly run across damaged SRVs with cargo racks you can crack open for materials or find caches of cargo and materials. But, as has been pointed out, different ships have different module size capacities, so a random "exotic module" may or may not be of any worth on your ship. So, I'm not a fan of "random power-ups", which is essentially what you're talking about. Manufacturers and engineers produce things customers desire to purchase. They don't make random things. And unless you're suggestion new Guardian stuff be added, that really won't work either because any Guardian tech we already have has to be adapted to human vessels. You wouldn't be able to simply "strap it in".

this is elite dangerous, not no mans sky
plus we already have "exotic" weapons, ships and armor.
you can unlock alien modules, weapons, armor, and ships which are exotic in their own right.
