Unknown Ring Types

I've come across a number of gas giants who's ring types are not listed (rocky, icy, metallic, etc). I discovered them via the discovery scanner, then scanned them down. The system map shows the planet, and it's reserve amount (pristine, common, etc) but doesn't list a ring type. What does this indicate? Do I need the detailed surface scanner to gain this data?

Edit: After buying the Detailed Surface Scanner, I can confirm that it reveals the ring type of planets.

I expect you would need the detailed surface scanner to analyse the composition of the rings just as you would to analyse the composition of a planet. I'm only guessing as I haven't tried it myself, but it seems logical.

With the detailed scanner it gives you the composition. Problem is that you cannot rescan a planet that you scanned before without the detailed scanner once you get it.

Are you sure they are gas giants? Another current bug is that dwarf stars (L, T, Y) will not show the rings around them.
