I found an NPC running from a customs ship, which instead stopped and scanned me. No fighting, but kind of cool.

Scooped cargo that you "found" just floating about is marked as stolen... so, beware the authority vessels. Sell at black market (Contacts -> Black market).

Oh boy, thx for the advice... I scooped some hydrogen fuel cells and could not sell them in the station and I was wondering why, since those were floating in space... well, left the station and got killed by Police immediately. lol

Getting in without getting scanned/popped seems to be the trick. Will there be devices to shield your cargo from hostile scans ? That'd be sweet

Try the chaff launcher! Disturbs hostile scans when used. Perfect smuggler tool.
It does not help against missiles, tough
