When we scan rings with the DSS set it up so we can sell that data to Universal Cartographics. When people purchase the data 'hot spots' in rings (or anything else you want to add anywhere else I suppose) can be seen by them. No need to do it yourself!
Not only would this make surveying a fun little profession it would create a valuable role for mining squadrons.
