Unlocking guardian tech by grinding guardian sites isn't fun.

My gametime loop since thursday.

Log in. Run a blueprint unlock. Sign out.
Next day. Log in. Run a blueprint unlock. Sign out.
Next day. You get the picture.

I look at Elite and feel disgusted by it. Its not a game I even want to turn on right now.
I will eventually get everything I need as I really want to go fight the Goids.

I dunno how I can say it any more elaborately than the title.

20 Minutes to an hour of content has been scraped and stretched out over ten or eleven hours. I found it frustrating the first time as the guardians batted my SRV around, somewhat enjoyable as a new activity the next 2 times or so, and utter drudgery after that.

FDEV: I understand that everyone is getting 3.0 Beyond for free, probably while most of your dev team is occupied by other more urgent projects.

I understand that project is probably the great looking Jurassic world, and you are almost certainly in a severe time crunch to get it completed right now.

But this is not the way. If you create an hour of content, allow it to just be an hour of content. Don't force us to go through it 20-30 more times until we're utterly, totally sick of it, and our overall takeaway from the game is a negative one. Let us do it once or twice, and come away with an overall positive experience of that time.

On the one hand I agree. On the other hand it's a hell of a lot more engaging than sitting in a system waiting for HGE's to spawn. I know which one I'd rather FDev sorted out first

Well, lets look at it properly...Its an interesting storyline...the location, Scenery, Graphics and Sound design are amazing, the puzzle is a little obvious (look at image...fetch displayed items...scan obelisk) but better than nothing and the mechanism for unlocking the Guardian data terminal is great too...
Depending on what you want to do it CAN be repetitive..Most people do it for the Guardian Weapons (12 Blueprints) BUT you're probably going to have to visit that many to complete the Puzzle...which lets be honest ISN'T Grindy...visiting Thargoid Structures, Finding a Thargoid Probe...Thargoid Tissue samples of ever increasing difficulty to collect...you'll likely end up with close to 12 Weapon Blueprints...
Where's the grind?
Oh yes...the Grind comes in if you want all the weapons AND some of the modules and you're not prepared to do anything but repeatedly relog at the same 2 structures to get them as quickly as possible...
Small wonder it feels repetitive if you do it like that!

That's a good assessment. I have two suggestions...

(1) For the player, don't try to unlock all the Guardian items. Just choose the ones you want, check the unlock requirements and get those. I've only really wanted one type of Guardian module so far. If you treat this game like Pokemon it will seem like a grind; if you play purposefully it won't.

(2) For FDev, do something about all the relogging! It's been said that it's not intended gameplay, but then we keep getting these game features which encourage it! (Dav's Hope, Orrere crash, Thargoid scout crash, board flipping, etc.) E.g. make each Guardian site unlock only one Guardian module, visiting the site and doing the routine once being enough for the unlock.

Someone asked "Well what do you want them to do?"

I want them to take out the horrifying repetition. I want to scan the thing once, and unlock a module. You can make me do a couple of DIFFERENT things to unlock a module. I'm okay with that. But making me do the SAME thing over and over is...terrible. You do the loop at a site? Boom. A module. That way you only have to repeat it 3 or four times, which is around where it starts to get truly tedious, not, you know. 16 g times or more.

As for the comment of "Well don't grind! You're only grinding because you want it all right away the fastest way."

....Sorry, the ONLY way I know to unlock the guardian modules (Which is what I'm going for, I havent even tried for the weapons yet) is to scan the orbs at sites and collect broken guardian tech bits. That's it. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY.

BTW should point out that Crime & Punishment is not new content and was in the DDF so can't be included as 3.0 content as it's 1.0 content that they never bothered with,

I joined the game at 2.0 - the whole kickstarter and 1.0 season slipped under my radar as I wasnt doing much gaming back then, but back in the days of 2.0 I used to read the DDF archives and it honestly made me sad to see some of the great ideas that had been debated out and brushed aside.

I'm not sure how your reply addresses the comment - The suggestion that it might seem like a bit less of a grind if you broke it up into small pieces and unlocked the modules gradually is not countered by, or even really related to, your point that the only way to unlock guardian modules is by scanning the orbs and collecting materials.

Perhaps you could unlock them as the bugs are ironed out of them and they're re-introduced to the game, eh?! :p

The thing with this particular game element is that, unlike a lot of other repetitive mechanics (games are made of those, that's not the problem) this one simply cannot reasonably be done "here and there" over time "as you just play"

Gaining X amount of bounties, this will just happen (unlocks an engineer) because things interdict you, try to pirate you, or missions send you to fight things, or, you simply choose to head into a ring while doing your normal thing.

Your also going to progress through the elite rankings, and the navy ranks, just by playing. Take a mission here and there, you'll gain a bit of both over time.

Gaining credits just happens.

And... Most (lots, some, choose your word) materials just end up being around, and you can just grab them (there are some notable exceptions, but this is generally true)

These guardian ruins, are unique, specifically placed, interactions.

They are also -way- outside of the "normal" play area, where most things to do exist.

This means, you literally have to go specifically to these things, which implies there is a reason to do so.

You aren't going to "happen upon" these places, which are the one and only source of materials to unlock certain modules. During the course of "normal" play.

So, once you make the decision to go and get these materials, you have gone to get them.

You can't just say "I'm not too bothered about how long this takes to get, I'll just let it happen naturally"

That doesn't work here at all.

This is the problem.
This is why this isn't "people wanting everything now"
Or people "whining about grind they could just not do"

It's a poorly implemented method of gaining special items in the game.
