Unofficial guide to having FUN and AVOIDING BOREDOM in Elite!

I've seen a fair number of posts recently about people being on the verge of giving up or outright throwing in the towel, largely out of frustration or boredom. This surprises me somewhat, simply because I've been playing since the beginning of premium beta, and am still enjoying the game immensely. I recognize that different people have different tastes, BUT I see a fair amount of consistent recurring themes in the "quit/boredom" threads that I believe are largely self-inflicted by those annoyed or bored with the game. And so, I present my (and yes, it is just MY) perspective on how to have FUN and AVOID BOREDOM in Elite.

It should be noted that I define FUN as an experience that makes you smile or exclaim (in an inside our outside voice), "That was cool!". I don't derive fun from simply inflicting misery on others (e.g. unprovoked attacks on other players), earning a lot of credits or flying a big ship. If that's what you seek, I won't be able to help. But if you're seeking to enjoy the experience, put a smile on your face, and have some good old-fashioned and basic fun, I may be able to help.

So, here are my own "rules", in no particular order:

1. Don't do one activity indefinitely - variety is key! If you're getting bored of bounty hunting, try trading or mining or smuggling. Don't keep doing something you find repetitive or monotonous, irrespective of foregone returns.

2. Don't FOCUS on earning credits or flying big ships! They're irrelevant to having fun. You can have a great deal of fun in a basic Sidewinder; you don't "need" an Anaconda to have fun. I've never flown anything more expensive than a Lakon 6 - since I started months ago in PB. Yes, it's true that Elite is more fun if you focus on the journey vs. an arbitrary destination. I mean, let's say that you received a decked out Anaconda in the mail from Frontier today. How long before you state you're bored of the ship because everything's too easy? Not long at all.

3. Avoid 3rd party exploration/trading/navigation tools! They're great for efficient credit earning, but will quickly make the game monotonous, repetitive and a lot less thrilling. It's much more fun to find your own lucrative trade route than it is to simply look one up and run it over, and over again.

4. If you're seeking more challenge, downgrade your ship and/or weapons! Ever tried taking on an Elite Anaconda in a basic Sidewinder? :)

5. If you do decide to fly something "bigger", fly with insurance! No point losing it all due to impatience. This won't make the game more fun, but it will reduce the frustration associated with the inevitable loss down the road. Of course, if you're seeking thrills and can handle a costly loss, ignore this rule.

6. If you find missions repetitive, create your own! Go to a USS and hunt for stolen items, and try to smuggle them into a guarded star port; not to make money, but for the thrill of it. Attempt to change the balance of power in a system. Look for a black hole. Engage in intense combat in a high intensity combat zone. Practice your combat skills with FA off - at nav beacons against wanted targets.

7. Fly in "Open"! It's more thrilling as the pilots around you are more unpredictable (and harder to fight, if need be) than NPCs. If you don't enjoy this sort of thrill, by all means stick to Solo, of course.

8. Interact with other Commanders - via voice or text comms! In my experience, most respond and most are very cordial. It makes the game more immersive, and makes the universe feel more alive. You can simply greet them, ask for tips/advice, whatever - but just communicate (a bit).

This doesn't negate the need for more content and improvements down the road. Those aside, though, it is most definitely possible to have fun in this game. At least based on my yardstick.

+1.

It's been commented on that this game is "a mile wide and an inch deep". While this may be true, the above tips will help you get the most out of the mile. If you limit yourself to just one part of the game, you will probably get bored. I've done a whole bunch of things to a limited degree: trading, moving rares, PvP piracy, bounty farming and now I'm doing some exploration. I might check out some conflict zones next, though will probably hit up some PvP piracy before that.

imagination 2 : make fun up : the thread

Buddy, you apparently bought the game on the 16th of December (based on your own posting history) and were bored of it already on the 17th. Now you just hang around and bemoan the "lack of content" etc. Why bother? Go play Diablo - you seem to enjoy that. Seriously - you've said so yourself!

Too many come from other mmo backgrounds thinking its going to be a similar experience i think. There is no holy trinity here, no fixed role or overly structured environments and systems that lead you around be the nose. A lot of what makes this game enjoyable for me happens on the fly its all about opportunism.

Too many people expect ''finished'' game with far more content if you ask me.

Well spoken Sir :D

However, I have to disagree slightly with your opinion.

Although I understand this game is more about YOU than it is about ITSELF I (myself) am lacking a little bit of variety coming from the game.

For example you say
6. If you find missions repetitive, create your own!
but (for ME) this is not what a good game is about. Don't get me wrong here, I really think E.D. is a really good game, unfortunately it is more a base for something epic and currently rather hollow.

What I would really appreciate would be a feeling of impact, no matter what you do. Currently I feel alone in this vast universe, basically because I do not have a feeling of membership. And even if I "make up my own story" and pretend that the station in front of me is my home I'd like to have something that really makes me feel that way.

But I still thank you to give some insight in how to play the game :)

And just to make sure, this is MY opinion. If you disagree you can rightfully do so...

Best regards

Znert

People can change their opinion. They obviously didn't get a good feel for the game at the start but maybe now have realized how to have fun in the game. Its nice to give people second chances. ;)

But fact that such "guide" is needed is sad itself :(

Many of us bought the game on launch, I personally wanted to wait till it was feature complete.
Dont see a reason why he should leave, forums are for discussing the good and the bad about the game.

All in all too many features are missing for me not to notice to the point where Im constantly on the forums while in SC to check if its even possible to do something I cant find in the game. I was convinced I just cant find the button to talk to NPCs for example, or I just cant find the passenger cabin module etc..
I lack the imagination to believe my 3t of grain are wealthy patricians on their way to Achenar.

As far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier. But when someone's posting history is basically just moans and groans about the game, that's when I think to myself: "Life's too short; go play something you enjoy." I mean, it's not like a bunch of new content will magically appear overnight - so anyone who genuinely doesn't enjoy the game "as is" may be better served elsewhere until s/he gets what s/he needs to enjoy Elite, if the above guide doesn't work. And based on said poster's -1 rep from him to me, they don't work. He's a very unhappy camper.

Good stuff! +rep.
i can't for the life of me figure out how people get bored of this game. There's literally a whole galaxy to explore. There's only one thing more boring than being bored. Voluntarily continuing whatever it was that bored you!

I would also like to offer some help to jaded players, so in no particular order:

1. Don't do one activity indefinitely - variety is key!
TV often has many interesting things to watch, or perhaps you could phone a friend (a relative is a suitable substitute if you don't have any friends), and pretend to be interested in whatever they've been up to recently. Making paper aeroplanes is always fun, and I also like to check the fridge every hour or so to see if something new and tasty has magically appeared since the last time I looked.

2. Don't FOCUS on earning credits or flying big ships!
They're irrelevant to having fun. In fact, next time you're at a supermarket, just sit in a shopping trolley and make cool spaceship noises - a totally unique 'ship' and no grind! Money's not important either. Unless bailiffs are knocking on your door, but with enough imagination you can pretend it's that nice neighbour you fancy from down the road hammering on your door. Ding-Dong!

3. Avoid 3rd party exploration/trading/navigation tools!
They're great for efficient credit earning, but will quickly make the game monotonous, repetitive and a lot less thrilling. Write everything down in a notebook - use a sharp pencil for best results and maximum 'old skool' cool. Also consider writing all your findings on the walls of your room like maybe a real space commander in his cockpit would have to! Yay! Immersion!

4. If you're seeking more challenge!
Walk into a dodgy looking pub/club and insult the scariest looking thug's lady. Whooo! Now you've got a challenge - not bored now, eh?! Maybe you drive or catch a bus to work? Buy a pogo-stick or space hopper and try that. Much more of a challenge, free exercise and smiles for you and passers-by galore! Win-win!

5. If you do decide to fly something "bigger", fly with insurance!
Steal a lorry, but wear gloves, running shoes and some kind of mask just to ensure you get away with it. If you choose a vehicle loaded with good stuff, then you've also bagged a lucrative trade run! Shrewd move Commander!

6. If you find missions repetitive, create your own!
Look, it's a shame your not OCD enough, but nevermind. You could maybe create a 'shopping list' and go do some shopping. I like 'Pot Noodles', cheese strings and Fanta orange fizzy drink. Or you might be different like my mate Steve. He likes Mars bars and Twiglets! Lol, Nooob!

7. Fly in "Open"!
Go outside, and run around! Parks are good places to do this, but watch out for trees! It's more thrilling as the pilots park drunks around you are more unpredictable (and harder to fight, if need be) than NPCs. If you don't enjoy this sort of thrill, by all means stick to the local streets, of course. Prepare for the possibility of being arrested and put under close observation though. If this happens, simply pretend that the Empire/Alliance/Feds have temporarily imprisoned you! (Keep that to yourself though, otherwise the observation period will probably increase).

8. Interact with other Commanders - via voice or text comms!
Phone random people or send them text messages. In my experience, most respond and most are very cordial, although puzzled. It makes the experience more immersive if you make space noises down the phone and call everybody 'commander' - it makes the universe feel more alive. You can simply greet them, ask for tips/advice, whatever - but just communicate (a bit). If they sound elderly or you've woken them up because they work nights, sign off with 'Aaargh! Under attack by pirates!!!!!.....' and put the phone down. Always make sure that caller ID is off. Well played Commander!

This doesn't negate the need for more content and improvements down the road. Those aside, though, it is most definitely possible to have fun in this game. At least based on my highly buffed yardstick.

Totally agree about mixing things up. I have traded up to an adder. This week I will be mining and exploring.

I also avoid the trading tools. For me the fun is discovering trade routes. I want to know I got where I am through all my own hard work. I record all black markets found and mining sites with potential.

ED is not boring
