Unofficial Launch Party

So, Frontier will be holding a party to celebrate the launch of Elite Dangerous. If you pledged on the Kickstarter for the £750 reward level or above, you will get an invite to Frontier's launch party (date not confirmed yet).

But what if you didn't or couldn't afford to pledge £750 and feel left out? You want to go the launch party, but won't get an invite. What can you do?

Well, I hope to organise an unofficial launch party somewhere in the UK.

There is no date set yet, because it will be on the same date that Frontier will have their launch party.

The Unofficial Party Will be held in Cambridge near London
The location has proved to be just too popular. Below is a poll of locations, and Cambridge still keeps getting votes. Combined with London votes, it far exceeds anywhere else.

Current suggestions for location :
Cambridge - 21 - mob,tsh,cra,cas,sla,foz,tj,fly,jam,dar,toa,tin,sp3 ,del,jum,lev,jem,joh,xyp,ric,hap
London - 8 - gra,car,dar,vai,del,and,kat,joh
Manchester - 8 - red,sup,liq,Iam,pla,nats,jkf,and
Nottingham - 8 - joh,odd,ali,pla,nats,joh,toa,hap
Glasgow - 2 - red,ste
Liverpool - 2 - sup,pla
Birmingham - 1 - and
Newcastle/York - 1 - bik

There is no venue set yet. This will be determined by where in the UK the unofficial party will be and the numbers of people coming.

There is no entertainment set yet. I'd like suggestions as to what type of entertainment people want. Please do not suggest specific artists.

So, the big question ... how much will this cost you?
This has not been decided yet, but as I hope you can appreciate, organising a party will not be for free. The venue will charge, entertainment will charge. I would like to supply a buffet for people attending the unofficial party, and that will cost too. This will all be covered by a fee for the party.

I would also have to ask everyone attending the unofficial party, to pay their own travel costs and accommodation costs if they wish to stay overnight where the party will be. I will help book accommodation, but I can't help pay for it. I would also ask people to expect to pay for their own drinks.

This should be all the costs. The fee to attend the party will be kept as low as possible, but will be calculated as follows :
cost of venue + cost of entertainment + cost of buffet divided by number of people.

I can understand if anyone wants to object to paying a fee for the party after paying on the Kickstarter, but without that fee, there will be no unofficial party.

I will have to have a deadline for the numbers of people attending the party, but this does not mean if you want to add your name to the party after the deadline, that it's too late. The deadline will be solely to gauge how many will come to book things like venue and food.

So, there it is. Feel free to state you will come, where in the UK you'd like the party and what sort of entertainment you'd like. I will try to answer any questions as best as I can.

Hi Alien. Oddball here.

I think a different date to the official party would be better because I would like to go to both of them.

intresting idea, i would think depending on numbers you are looking at between £60 for maximum numbers and anything upto £150 for low numbers.
though im a couple of hundred miles from cambridge, i would think that anywhere near cambridge would be a halfway point for me.

I guess everyone will say a town near them so I'll pitch for one near me; Nottingham. It's centrally located, has excellent rail and road links to most of the rest of the country, has good, cheap public transport and most importantly plenty of venue options. If Wikipedia is to be believed it is also the birthplace of the Creator.

This centrally located Nottingham of yours, has it got an international airport to speak of? There is quite a few people living across the Channel, or maybe even the Big pond...

@redborg - would you go if the location was outside Glasgow? I would not expect you to travel all the way down to London, and I would not expect someone in London to travel to Glasgow.

There is nothing to stop you or someone organising a Scottish unofficial launch party.

@Oddball - I won't rule out a different date if enough people want it, but the point is that it mirrors Frontier's party.

@Mobius - I have not set the fee yet, and as I explained it will be worked out by adding the costs and dividing by the number of people. The more that want to come, the cheaper it gets for everyone.

@johnr - Nottingham is a good choice, but you didn't mention how good it is for hotels / B&B accommodation.

With regards to Nottingham and airports there's East Midlands Airport which flies to most European countries. Unfortunately, it doesn't do long haul so far as I know. (Nottingham is less than 90 minutes by train from London, which is nothing if you're flying long haul.) There is an hourly 24 hour bus service from the airport to the city centre and vice versa.

Not sure on the hotel situation there is the usual gamut of Premier Inns and other city centre budget hotels. I suppose it depends on numbers.

I live nowhere near Nottingham but I think it would be a suitable place as it is pretty central in the UK.

how about party in US if there are enough pledges from here...
I can't organise a US party, and I can't ask people from the UK to go to the US for it (and I couldn't go anyway).

There is nothing to stop someone in the US organising an unofficial Elite Dangerous launch party

I think Cambridge would be a good option and as Oddball said it would be best to choose a date near but not the same as the official party. That way if it is in cambridge you might be able to get some Frontier employees to attend.

In fact I'm happy to buy a drink for any Frontier staff member that does attend ;)

I'm sure together we could make it a quite attractive night out for them!

That puts the cat among the pigeons! I was going to say have it the same night, but if the Frontier chaps and chapesses would like to attend as well perhaps a different night is more suitable. Maybe Ashley can spread the word at FD and give us an idea if any of them would like a night out? :)

If its just us backers, i'd say have it the same night... maybe we could set up a couple of webcams and projectors to skype between venues?

Location-wise... i live near Hull, so its pretty easy to get to most places. Obviously i wouldn't mind if it were in Hull itself, but i don't think i'll subject you all to its dizzying array of sights and smells ;) Cambridge would be ok by me as its straight down the A1. Who knows, we could book the function room next door to Frontier's :p

Re: Location ... I am liking Nottingham, with Manchester as a second choice. Manchester will be further to get to for some people and more expensive, while Nottingham will be further to get to for anyone in Scotland, but may be cheaper.

Re: Numbers attending. I am going to give this thread a month, until Feb 5th to get sufficient numbers. If the response remains like this until then, the idea is scrapped. If people start saying they want to come, and we see some decent numbers for this, I'll get serious about it and a final deadline for numbers will be a bit closer to the date.
